Big Grin DICTATOR ToT - DEVELOPMENT THREAD!

    Yep!

With Bitterfrost complete, I felt it was high time I got the next project
for ToT underway. The upgraded version of Dictator has long been in
my mind, but now with the completion of my university work it is
necessary to get various CIV promises to myself and others underway!

Curt will now get busy and back into full CIV2 mania again! Huzzah!

This will be my most ambitious CIV project so far, in terms of attempting
to 'get it right'. There are as much of the ToT trimmings as I could include.
I have made WW2 Improvement pedia images, plenty of new sounds, a totally new
and grand Mercator map, and as for the units, I can only say one word...Fairline!

There are some who argue that the WW2 scenario situation is a little stale, but
ToT offers new territories to explore, and the potential to make this traditional
area of CIV2 really rock. Anyone who has seen the epic Operation Market Garden will
know what I mean! Tech's CIV 'magnum opus' and the huge Red Front ToT were my main
inspiration here...So please prepare for some delicious war-megalomania!

This version is quite similar to the MGE Dictator, only with more units, fun
and strategic terrain, new cities, new sounds, extended events that include
various extra WW2 happenings, and an improved tech tree.

The goal is the same as all previous versions, pick a faction from the
Axis or Allies, and replicate or surpass their historical WW2 performance!

    Where are we at?

The map and cities are placed.
The terrain and unit graphics are done.
The events are done. (maybe some tuning neeeded)
All the text files are tuned and done.

    New sounds might be added.
    Improvement images are being tweaked.
Unit placement and fine tuning are underway.
My own gameplay tests will begin in a week or so.

I fully expect the odd glitch, etc - And this is where you
chaps will be able to help out, we shall hunt the bugs!

Of course, the prototype will be available soon, so keep watching!

Just as a little sneaky peek, here is what to expect...

    Shaving Private Ryan.

    Curt,
All I can say is you have a style that cannot be duplicated.
The blond nazi reeks of the Enemy Ace LOL.
You have made peace with the evil Wheredehekowi tribe-we demand you tell us if they are a tribe that is playing this scenario.
We also agree not to crush you, if you teach us the tech of warp drive and mental telepathy and give 10 trinkets

She's packing some bazooka's herself though.

OK, I really must stop with the sad, sexist jokes. No wonder my sister says I'll never get a girlfriend.

    Looks great Curt.

Cheers, I have a feeling the new tweaked terrain properties will make sure it plays great too!

Now terrain can make the difference between defeat and triumph for sure.

From the Mustang to the He-111, the units are superbly rendered.

Could you possibly prevail upon Fairline to do one of those SS blonds for the lake in the screenshot. 'Bout ankle deep in the water would be about right. Think of the possibilities for events/popups.

This was not meant to be a serious question, eh?

Btw, Curt, about those German troop shields ... maybe you´d want to use that German standard cross as sign - so you won´t have inverted swastikas around ...

I agree with Jim, the backward swastikas and SS insignia look odd. Although them being backwards looks weird, dropping the SS and swastikas would be a shame, as they add so much flavor to the units.

Also, and maybe it's just from the screen shot, the German Panzer graphic seems to be cut off in the back. The unit just suddenly stops. See what I mean?

Short of placing an assymmetric symbol in the unit key, I don't know of a way to avoid backwards ones getting displayed.

Btw, isn't that twin engined bomber (JU-88?) a bit much for Bambi in the woods? Her odds are already pretty poor already with that German rifleman shooting pointblank.

    Hey!
I treat every question as serious!

Most of the graphics are done, man...But I will have a
looksee around the files to see of there is anything
    that needs upgrading.

    *thinks for a moment*

If you need a task, then I do need a flag for the neutral allies
and the commonwealth nations, both are using plain colour
flags right now - If you feel like it?

    And!
If you feel like something really fun, how about creating me a
whole range of new tech icon images? here is what I need!

*These are all to be in the typical CIV2 icon sizes*

    German national flag icon.
    USA national flag icon.
    Japan national flag icon.
    British national flag icon.
    USSR national flag icon.

*These are up to your own ideas*

Economics icon. (some kind of bank note?)
    Science icon. (light bulb/beaker?)
    Industy icon. (factory symbol?)
    Infantry rifle icon.
    Armour icon.
    Airplane icon.
    Navy icon.
    Skull and bones icon.

Nice and clear as you wish, and be mad with the colour,
because these are to be BMPs, so the sky is the limit!

Tell me if you are up for it, bro!

    Alas!
The limits of the CIV2 unit grid!

But the Panther was a bit of a slab shape, with an quite abrupt rear!

    But a sexy tank, nonetheless!

I will be keeping the current unit badges, as they cease to be a problem
after some play, as you are endlessly shuttling them left and right in ToT.

The twin engined beasts are the He-111 and Ar-234, the first jet bomber in the world.

Bambi did put up a famously brave defence of the enchanted forest, but sadly
he was no match for the armoured might of the Leibstandarte Panzer Division...

Reversed symbols and flags never pose a problem for me. We don't always approach a flagpole from the correct angle.

It is none other than Fritz 'Bambi' Bloodstein!

Afew weeks Curt? I'd be willing to wait afew months for a game like this!! The new infantry units just look fantastic, and words alone can't describe how fitting that title graphic is. You know if my humble services are ever required that you should feel free to give me a shout.

Also, just out of curiosity how long has it been since you released Dictator V1.0?

    Thanks, man!

Well, I guess Jim might want to help with the icons, but
if you wish to tackle a bunch of icons or the two civ-flags
I need (seeing as you are the master of these!) I would
    be more than delighted.

    PS
Out of sheer nostalgia, I had a look through my archives
and I found the very first Dictator-type scenario, which
was called 'Dictator - Global Power' dated March 2001...

Compared to what I am working on now, this version is
very weird, it even has spaceships - Why, I cannot recall!

Curt ... I started with the things you requested - and then I run across these darned flaws (you know about them by now).

So I made up some civ flags instead - I don´t know if they come in handy.

Btw, would you please be so kind to post the civ flags you´ve already done so I can do those other flags in a similar style ...

Nice! *adds to the HD graphic archive*

What I need is a flag for the barbs (purple), neutrals (yellow) and the commonwealth (dark orange)...

If you could incorporate these civ colours into the flag somehow that would be cool.

If not, fire away. Between you an Saarstock, I have no doubt the flags will rule!

Curt, old chap, here cometh thine flags ... I am not really content with the Commonwealth flag - though I thought it´s been worth a try.

    Tell me what you think!

Btw, I also took the liberty to "update" your flags a little ...

    Nice title graphic indeed.

The units look very nice! I must say that I'm really looking forward to this one, I guess it will be the ultimate Dictator scenario. And your modern day scenario seems very interesting too.

Yes I'm sure we would all love to know more about this modern day apocolyptic scenario. In any case, I'm curious if there is a reason China is not included as its own civ in this and other versions of Dictator? Due you feel that China had too small a role to play on the international scene as well as too few special units and technologies to offer?

    Just curious....

    @Jim:
These are not too bad, and the commonwealth one is a good idea...!
I might use your idea for the neutrals, only with the red colour bands as vertical.

I would be blown away if you have a go at the improvement icons!

    @Arthedain:
The new modern effort will be mental, but so will my first ever Sci-Fi scenario!

    @Sarsstock:
More less you are on the ball!
I felt the need to represent the brave efforts of the Australians,
Canadians and many other allies of the Commonwealth forces.
And I wanted to avoid a massive Brit civ, but also represent a civ
that could help fight the Axis, but not be in the soup from the start...

Like the British, but not as under pressure.

    Latest news from the front!

I have been playtesting the game, and have been making various changes
to the economic model to fine tune tech flow and disorder on the Allied civs.

The Allies have the commie goverment (renamed to democracy)
to prevent chronic unhappiness that will come from massive army use.

The Soviets are now a republic, to represent the USSR's
stucture and the expansive nature of Stalin's fiefdom.

I can say the game plays well, and the civs behave well.

The USA is back in the fight, the new map has made the
AI far more hostile, and that is perfect! The Japanese
and 3rd Reich are a deadly double act who are very
hard to knock out...It should be a challenge!

In my last game, by June 1945, the world was a raging, warring mess!

The Sovs and Germans were slogging it out in the ruins of Western Russia,
and the Pacific is on fire with Japanese and Allied ship and plane wrecks!

It should be interesting to see what happens now with
the new civ economic models. And the new sound FX.

I am now going to play a few more test games, then this
week I will see about a test version for you chaps to play!
