Amazing, the SL goes down and suddenly there's an upsurge in the petition! Maybe we should do this more often?
Probably not!![]()
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

That, presumably, includes Civ2. There are some contact e-mail addresses at the bottom of the article, but if they're going to start publishing Civ2 in July, I think it would be very surprising if they would be willing to release the source code.Separately, 2K Games had previously secured publishing and distribution rights to Sid Meier's Civilization back catalog of products and will begin publishing these titles as of July 1st.

Not necesarily... The game has built-in copy protection.. If we don't touch that, then I don't see how the project could harm them. On the contrary, it might attract new people who might buy the game to check out what is done with the source...
It all depends on the licence under which the code is released, I guess.
Indifference is Bliss

That's a very good point, N35t0r. It might be a good idea to emphasize to 2K that by releasing the Civ2 source code, they may actually increase their sales.

I remember that I was surprised how old games such as Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and others were on emulator but could not be legally played OR BOUGHT on emulator. You needed to buy the console and the cassette... plastic.
Nintendo could have done something great by puting on computer and let the source code, no?
Then Nintendo reused all this... But Civ has Civ 1-2-3 and 4 coming. Does it make Civ2 not-to-be-used again? Anyone knows that? Because I think this is really what they might be looking at as the main point, legally or else.
