After making the skyscrapers, I'm continuing to push the limits of Civ2 graphics.
This mod makes use of the railroad, mountain, hill, and river tiles.
Specific details:
Hills = Freeways.
Mountains = Bridges. The horizontal bridge uses the single tile. Curves, T and X intersections are not used.
RRs = connectors for bridge to freeway.
Rivers = To get the bridges to render without a coastline, all the coasts were blanked. To make the coasts less hard edged, all coast tiles are rivers, and the rivermouth is that swampy shoreline.

Gonna retouch the coastline corner graphics, I just realized that some of them won't ever show up around the bridges and can be used. Preliminary gfx will be uploaded tomorrow.

Wow, it even works with bridges! Those are done very well!![]()
Plus, this might be of interest for FC.
At the forum over there I've seen these sort of request for a special "bridge" or "canal"-tile appear on a number of occasions. I always considered those requests a bit superfluous. Isn't a canal nothing more than a line of interconnected ocean squares on a map? And the same goes for landbridges. It could already be done, Red Front already had a bridge unit that hides a land tile underneath it. With enough engineers you can change ocean into land and build a short landbridge (in FC you need a min of 3 land squares nearby before you can turn ocean into land)
I think i'm understanding all those request for canals and bridges a bit better now. I was just stuck in my own paradigm to see it. The issue isn't about designing a map with ocean squares as "canals" or a "landbridge"-tiles. It's really about a terrain tile that can be used both my naval and land units! Sort of a special road tile that allows two different unit types to use it.
In which case there is a place for canals and bridges in Civ! Although I don't know how tricky it us to implement something like that in FC.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Brilliant! I could actually use some of this for the mafia scen I'm working onIs that possible?

Very interesting Smiley.Great work.
Here are the bridge and freeway and coast terrain tiles- Kobra, yes, you can adapt them to Mafia.
Note that I've moved the hills to the forest slot for global warming mechanics reasons.

You could use the river tiles over bridges to blanl their coastlines and keep regular coastlines untouched...

Beautiful stuff![]()
That doesn't work since the coast is added to the outside of the bridge tile (on the adjacent water tiles)Originally posted by N35t0r

Even if river mouths are all blue water?
(must not post when tired
)
Hmm, that's a good idea, I'll give it a try.
EDIT: Works!
Not only that, but the non-intersecting river tiles have now been freed up for use as other things... I'm thinking Tunnels.

I just got back from a week in SF over Easter, so this is a nice reminder of our trip. It's pretty accurate, and impressive. Just how usable is it, scenario wise?
Well, these graphics are being made for a San Francisco based scenario.
I have one question at this point- does changeterrain preserve rivers?

Yeah, that was what I meant. Glad that it worked (and that there's people here who can clarify my ramblings, thanks Boco)Originally posted bySmiley

I'm guessing yes. But a changeterrain to ocean and then back would probably delete it.Originally posted bySmiley

Very very cool.
So ships will still be able to cross 'under' the lower horizontal 'bridge' just not the two upper angled 'bridges'?
The angled bridges aren't crossable, but if you look at the top left, the surrounding terrain has been adjusted to make a strait.

Current progress on Terrain1.gif
The Glacier terrain is now University, and you will be able to build these high-value terrain squares by researching technologies that trigger Changeterrain.

The straight line river tiles have been turned into Tunnels. Railroad tiles link the tunnel mouth to adjacent freeway tiles.
RIght now I'm using the default hill terrain tinted green. Does anyone have some hills that will look decent even when placed in a big mass?

While the corner rivers are used to make Downtown.
This leaves the single river (the mini-lake) unused for the time being, though I've got an idea for it in conjunction with the two unused vertical railroad tiles.

How about the 3rd terrain from the top in this one:
http://www.civgaming.net/mercator/le...s/allterr2.gif
(I'd have nicely cut out the hills, like Arthedain did but I don't have any decent image editor on this computer)
It's looking bloody marvellous, by the way... But isn't there a corner of the coast tiles missing, judging from that last screenshot?

Bloody marvellous? You can actually see the Coit tower![]()
'Frickin Genius' is a more suitable description.
The top and bottom coast corners need to be blank, or they will show up alongside the horizontal bridges.

Btw did I mail you back saying thanks? I recall doing it but I just thought of it and got unsure. Anyways, thanks for your help.

Yes, you did mail me.
In fact, I only just checked my mail. I was about to reply, but I guess I won't have to do that anymore.
Good luck with it![]()
