Blah, that shoots down my next hope ... as Angband was made in 1990; not really shareware (freeware), but not text based ... but made by a Robert, or Alex and Andy, not a Steve. Ah well.

Super Hero League of Hoboken by Steve Meretzky?
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Clue 3: This game is part of a series of early games by "steve"... More specifically it was released in either 1991 or 1992.
And it's still sold on "steve"'s company's website.
(Next clue I'll start giving out hints about the game itself- I'll be on again in a three hours... guess people please! Don't you play fantasy games- the maker of this game was/is FAMOUS!)
Review of Clues:
1.) PC game
2.) Early 1990s
3.) "Shareware"
4.) Fantasy-based
5.) Made by a game named Steve
6.) Steve Still Has a website where he sells games
7.) 1991 or 1992
8.) Part of a Series

Gee. How do you guys know all these obscure SNES/Atari games when you don't know computer games? This game was HUGE!
Okay, well, last hint and if no one gets it in 24 hours, then I suppose I should, as decorum dictates, let someone else have a try with a new game.
Clue 6: It was a Sequel
Clue 7: Moraffware.
Clue 8: Descend into Randomly Generated Dungeons where it gets more dangerous the deeper you go- battle Vampires, etc.

Is it Angband?![]()

Not angbad (never heard of that...)... keep guessing.
Clue 9: Play a Warrior, Mage, or (I think) Thief.. It's a Dungeon Crawl- easy rip off of D&D. 1991 release. Avaliable on MANY free-shareware software CDs.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it not being angband (due to the fact that Steve isn't the name of any of the major designers of Angband) a long while agoOriginally posted by DrSpike
Is it Angband?![]()
Angband, for the uninitiated, is one of the most popular Roguelike games, ASCII graphics based (although there are many graphical mods for it) dungeon crawlers. Angband specifically is based on UMoria, which is a Tolkien-based game. UMoria came out in '83 for Unix (and subsequently for others including DOS). Angband came out in '91 or so, a few years after Moria was no longer maintained actively I believe, as a significant rewrite. Several shops were added or substantially modified; more classes of monsters added; more variation in many of the monsters; more classes of adventurer, as well as more races; several advanced settings (such as Autoroller, the greatest cheat ever!); and many other minor upgrades. Also, the game's ending changed; rather than a semirandom event (finding the Balrog at a very low level, as in Moria), it's a 'fixed' event happenning at level 99 and then level 100.
Angband has spawned dozens of remakes, from ZAngband (ZelaznyAngband) to a Pern remake, several tolkien-based remakes modifying things the creators thought were interesting, and some total overhauls. Go to http://www.thangorodrim.net for more info.![]()

If I didn't know better I would say Wizards&Warriors II or III, but you said PC and randomly generated dungeons.

Okay, well to move things along, it's : Moraff's World.
An AMAZING game!
-From the UnderdogsSecond and best in Steve Moraff’s quirky RPG series, Moraff’s World expands the kill-monsters-get-treasure premise of Moraff’s Revenge by adding more sophisticated gameplay features, and many times larger gameworld. Description as MobyGames says it all: “There are many dungeons and continents to explore in this classic. All the dungeons are randomly generated, though once the game is played for the first time the dungeons stay the same afterwords. There are over 40 different monsters with different attributes and weak points and 200 levels of each dungeon to play. The dungeons are explored in first person view, and you can travel over the surface of the earth in top down view as an X. (the effect used to display varying heights of terrain is interesting) There are also many items to collect, from holy hand grenades to your standard set of plate mail armor.”
With a larger scope than Moraff’s Revenge and better user interface than Dungeons of The Unforgiven, Moraff’s World is the best RPG in this cult classic series. Recommended for any fan of Roguelike games who is looking for a “light” dungeon crawl with a cool sense of humor. Oh, and if you never find the holy hand grenade in the game, you ain’t seen nothing yet [EG]. Thumbs up!
Note: Although it doesn't say so on Moraffware's official website, all of the old Moraffware shareware games are still sold. Contact their sales dept. at the e-mail provided below for details.

Clue Two. Be careful - when transiting between the nearly twenty areas in the game, your helicopter might run into some unsavory trucks ...
