Yeah, it's a cool mod. I'm surprised you're having difficulty, unless you jacked up the difficulty level. I find RaR Deity plays like stock Emperor or so. And growth is supposed to be slow, though I don't know about that slow.
Anyone play the Rise and Rule mod for C3C yet? I'm getting my ass kicked up and down by the damn barbarians. Colonization of the continents is very slow because the barbarians are so tough.
I had a extrememly large continent and by 840AD, it was maybe a third colonized. Barbarian hoardes just swarm in and pillage everything, and the toughest unit I've got can't really hurt barbarian horesemen. This ain't garden variety C3C.

Yeah... I play it. Great mod. The barbs are tough (Barbarian Raider 2/2/1, looks like a Swordman; Barbarian Rider 4/2/2, looks like a horseman), but I think that you almost need to up the difficulty setting as the game is so different from the original that the AI just can't cope (Like each pop eats 3 food. That one alone messes up how the AI operates).
I fight the barbs with stacks. Use a spear (3 defense) with an Archer (or sword if you have them) and a bunch of cats. As the Barbs only attack in NW/SE direction and always move to the higher def bonus tile, you can try to set it up so that they smash against a couple of fort spear on a mountian.

I changed the barb setting so they move randomly. That may be why I'm having a lot more trouble. Instead of having a stack of barbs, I have a swarm of them covering my countryside, pillaging everything in sight.

By Crom! That's how it's supposed to be![]()

Sounds nasty.
I've been playing TAM, which has pretty hardcore barbs too. It's made harder by the higher cost of spearmen (the best technique remains aggressive barb hunting with archers, but sometimes you need some "d") and the fact that you cannot build barracks until the 3rd age* (thus, all units built in cities other than your capital are regulars). Still, once you get used to it, it's manageable.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.
RAR has similar rules. Bronze working takes a while to get, which gives you 1.3.1 spearmen, unless you're Greece (1.4.1) or Carthage (2.3.1). Even then, the 4.3.2 barbarian horsemen can still kill them, and during an uprising, that's gonna happen. Thank goodness they don't destroy cities like they did in Civ 2, but it sucks watching some outpost go and your entire fortune get pillaged.
You don't get barraks until the end of the 1st age, unless you build the Sphynx. Me likey Sphynx.

the thing i hate the most about R&R is that much more and much earlier units are amphibious. And the AI is using them, no warning, sneak attack, city lost :/

That was surprising, yes, but it's accurate.

That's much quicker than in TAM! I've been having a discussion in the Files forum about the fact that the only city that can build vet units or - more importantly - upgrade units for 2.5 ages is your capital. You don't get barraks until the end of the 1st age, unless you build the Sphynx. Me likey Sphynx.
Regarding the barbs... best to attack them if you can. Easier said than done, I know.
Yeah, the first game I played out with TAM hit me with the same thing. I hadn't even noticed that archers were amphibious, so it took me completely by surprise. I've wised up now. Coastal cities with any sort of enemy presence near them must have 2 units in and backup available.the thing i hate the most about R&R is that much more and much earlier units are amphibious. And the AI is using them, no warning, sneak attack, city lost :/

The Ancient Med. Another Mod for Conquests. I like it. It has some issues, IMO, but so does the stock game, after all. It's got flavor. And it's got 3 great ages worth of ancient stuff (Classical Age, Hellenistic Age, Imperial Age). The fourth age isn't anything to speak of, but you can't have everything

One problem I see with RAR is the accumulation of massive piles of cash by the AI.

Why is that a problem?
I see the AI establishing embassies. Hell, possibly they even use spys...

Yes! I actually caught the Zulu's sneaking on me (and successfully sniped a tech off them for good measure!). However, I've noticed that the AI is impared by the 3-food-eating citizens.
It's been mentioned that a higher difficult helps the AI cope with R&R's differences. May I ask how? My understanding is that higher difficultes only change the starting conditions and rates of production for the AI. Did R&R re-do the AI?
In my first try all other civs simply settled where they started and so those who got sat next to a resource flourished while the Celts never grew beyond one city.
No, it's just that when you only need 12 food to grow a town without a granary, etc., it makes it a lot easier for the AI the compete. I don't think it's possible to change the AI too much in this regard. Only 'build often', etc., sort of things can be changed.

This sounds like a very neat way to play a pbem..I am getting some valuable experience..and this would maybe slow down someother players as well..make for a very interesting gameplay![]()

Actually, sometimes it might seem that gameplay speeds up. Minimum research time has been dropped to one turn. So the techs come fast and furious.

Hey, I would love to try my hand in this.
I have set up PBEM before. Did you want start a thread in the PBEM forum to see if we can get at least one more player (I would prefer only four humans as more tends to bog a game down)?

A Rise and Rule PBEM sounds like a good test of general Civ skills. I'd be able to take another game on. Five or six players is managable for PBEM IMO, if they are strongly interested...
Enjoy Slurm - it's highly addictive!

yes..but getting dedicated regualr players would be the trickOriginally posted by Rommel2D
