  • GameSpy Part 4: Germans and The Maya

Gamespy has part four of their look at the 18 nations of RoN up as of yesterday. (http://www.gamespy.com/articles/october02/ron4/) The preview looks at the Germans and the Maya civilizations and how their history impacts what they are and mean to the game. Here are the highlights:

Continuing our nine-part series on the nations which appear in Microsoft and Big Huge Games' Rise of Nations, we find that the game is now moving toward beta testing.

Sounds good, hopefully they will then have plenty of time to get as many bugs out as possible and maybe do a public (if limited) beta release.

As for the Germans, Gamespy says that while they are warring nation, they are a favorite to be used to work on the economy early in the game. By the later stages of the game, the German blitzkreig manuvers make them an ideal nation to play. They should be a strong civ for a player that can last the whole game.

Meanwhile, the Maya are the opposite. They have free militia upgrades due to the history of this group's militia army. This makes them ideal for early game attacks and rush attacks. They will be perfect if you do not think you can last the whole game against a superior opponent.

Gamespy goes on to say, however, that these are not the only strategies that will work with each civ. Instead there is a rich level of depth allowing various strategies with each civ.

The hope is that BHG's time to balance will assure that each civ will have multiple options on how to win the game. Time will tell.
