I only play at intelligent level (say painfull) as of yet, I will prolly move to next level soon, but I find it a lot harder then before...yet this strategy work fine and here is the details...
I decide to play a good civilisation, yet sometimes I click the neutral solution if the good is to much of a cripple, yet all research/starship bonus make me so happy as they affect only this planet and I don`t depend on new colonize planets for such stuff at any rate and make my good points.
: federalist, + 2 speed (cost 8) + 20 research
I set myself 0-50-50 for the first few turns where I buy my colony ships, then turn 66-0-34 for my starting expension, not sure how I want to change that, but I have bad experience putting less then 50% in military/social in past game so this is why I put stuff in social at start since buying in military anyway...basically, I want to start social production only when I can start with Fusion powerplant...
At first expend the more and nastiest way, if you are lucky, you should get like 1/4 to 1/3 of the map showing under your color with a few planets in someone else sectors(usually you will do 1 bad choice with 1 computer, in that game I was lucky, could not have choose better, it was the Altarians that was at a few keys points in middle of my sectors). Once you are done with expension, turn back to 33-33-34, althought I am not exactly sure what would be best.
Now you should receive Yor Collective & Drengin funny messages about how you are a cheap monkey or would make fine oil for mechanic or something close to that, ALWAYS ignore then, reject, but give them no comment, don`t inflame them.
Eventually the Drengin Empire will declare war on you all to eager to invade you, yet they lack Impulse drive, so they are completely pointless for now, same with Yor Collective, but they take a little longer.
Meanwhile, you will find all civilisations you can, minors and major. Build NO SHIPS other then survey/colony/constructor. Yes, no military ships. Trade techs and sell them as much as you can to turn you govnement expendure to 100% ASAP and try to maintain it at 100% on others money, usually minor races are richs and behind in tech, this is HUGE phat money to keep you running at 100% and it turn them in love with you. Trade with Altarians, Arceans and Torians as well...and if like me, even the Drengin and the Yor altought you know they will attack you!
Build the eyes of the Universe and the Drivers(+2 moves) ASAP! Without them, you are in heavy troubles, with them, it is a joke to ward off any attack as you see everything and you have +4 moves on each ships...
Soon, the war on Drengin and the Yor while each of them should crush you easily will gain you the friendship of the Altarians. Build on this, you NEED them! Use their hatred of evil and Ally them in time. The minor races will all be scared to be attacked by the Yor and Drengin and will be afraid to see you fall...and the Torians sympathise with you...
Result: We ----the Altarian, the Torians or any minor races--- recognize you valliant effort against the evil Drengin/Yor empire and present you some of our finest ships...this will bring you an income of like 6-10 corvettes/star fighter/battleaxes each year...soon enought the Altarians will declare war on them and start protecting you as best as they can...
Now...a Corvette have a base move of 3...add + 4, deadly sensor and any more tech you developp... Drengin/Yor transport are never escorted and they have a base move of 1 + whatever they developp. You have a **** load of Corvettes/star fighters...no transport will make it close to your planets ever...not even in their dreams. From time to time a constructor will defeat a corvette if you put nothing in military, just be carefull, as the base are a little harder even (yet a corvette can take it down, lot of luck it seem).
Meanwhile you are the bigger empire, you goes a 100% and make a lot of constructor to developp your infrastructe while keeping links of good relations.
In time you will be more productive them the whole galaxy will be! At that point only major outclassing by technology can be a trouble, and only the Torians can really be a match on this, yet, they are CLOSE to you by then, so you have time to adjust and focus your strategy...and since you are the most productive...
Oh...I almost forget to say...focus on developping sector with 3+ planets mostly, don`t waste time on that nice 30+ planet that is alone, yes you can build the social structure and all, but it is not worth doing more then self developping and sending constructor to help from time to time...you put 3+ starbases with all mining production maxed in your sectors with 3+ planets, this get each planet a +120 X number of starbase...this completely outmacth anything else I see so far althought it is long to get started...yet if you developp fine, time is your all and by 95 you should be the stronger then all the rest of the galaxy together(and Altarians/Torians ain`t likely to be at your throat unless you want them to, they are pretty much reliables).
FAST resume: Minor races/Altarians/Torians + survey ships are more then enought to handle your wars if you have +2 speed, eyes of universe and the +2 speed gravity thingy. Remember, if you spread fine at start, you don`t need to expend anymore, you are the biggest by far, you just need to hold on what you have, and sensor wonder + speed make wonders to turn your few survey ships in awfully powerfull beast as they rape all ressources...computer don`t like +1 weapon and +2 defense items for their survey ships, don`t under estimate it, of course in a very late game it would be useless, but...the way to Avatar is far and I see my survey ship take 3 dreadnought in a row(mid games) without blinking much and not even having darkened hulls!
