Decent article but he’s out of his depth and naive on Chinese Communist Party and how they are. He also bought the line that it was a Wuhan government problem. CCP is beyond evil and moving towards Mao policies than the opposite. Remember even “good guy” reformers like Deng Xiaopeng decided to run over protesters with tanks. The mindset of oppression and lack of respect for life is something he can’t even relate to. (Though Krazyhorse does).

He tries too hard to mix race and government, you can criticize the CCP without being racist.

    This comment much more aware:

    Let’s see…

SARS in 2003 started in a Guangdong wet market. The world told China to stop consuming wild animals in medieval butcher environments, China called those people racist and said don’t interfere in internal affairs.

Last year African Swine Flu ravaged Chinese farmed pigs because incentives for provincial and local level officials abound, and there is no free media so while people may gossip there is no way to aggregate anecdotes into data and we are forced to rely on official numbers. Again, don’t criticize China because it’s an internal matter. Let’s talk about Trump and the trade war!

Now with COVID19, China knew it was a new SARS type virus in November at the very latest, it silenced doctors and destroyed samples. Taiwan warned the WHO in late December that the virus was spreading person to person. A full two weeks later China’s lapdog, the WHO, was still spreading Chinese propaganda that there was no person to person transmission.

As January wore on, large CCP banquets were held in Wuhan and life proceeded as normal for the city. People were naturally gossiping and millions left town before the lockdown was issued. The CCP had waited MORE THAN TWO MONTHS TO TAKE ANY ACTIONS, and now the virus had spread everywhere. The first COVID19 case in the US was tested positive on January 20; the Wuhan lockdown did not begin until January 23. They could have shut it all down in Wuhan, eliminating all other global cases. Calling the Wuhan cover-up just as bad as any other country’s response is just plain ignorance. Wuhan was the original sin, every other case on the planet stems from Wuhan.

In January the WHO and the Chinese government were calling restrictions on Chinese travel visas at best unnecessary, at worst racist. The WHO refused to raise the alarm, and China refused to let the WHO into Hubei.

Now as Chinese official case numbers dip to zero (they haven’t admitted to any domestic to domestic transmission for weeks), the Chinese narrative shifts to blaming foreigners, forcing mandatory 14 day quarantine on foreigners based on skin color rather than travel history, and raising conspiracies at the highest levels of officialdom about how the US Army had managed to import and spread COVID19 in Wuhan.

This is the country we are dealing with. Damn straight I’m blaming the Chinese Communist Party, all their propagandists, all their sympathizers and deflectors, and all their useful idiots.

                    • Lancet just published a report saying fatality rate 0.66% taking into account undetected cases. Still about 2X too high, IMO, but at least converging on reality. And remember that the lower the fatality rate, the higher to unobserved transmission rate and thus the more impossible it is to control it in any but the shortest term.

You ****ing germaphobes are trampling on the liberty and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people to extend the lives of a few thousand of the elderly and infirm by a couple of years. Let. It. Happen.

                      • As many better economists than you have pointed out, if 10s of thousands (or 100s of thousands) are dying, people are not going to just go about their normal life.

We need to get things under control ASAP. We lost 2 months due to poor leadership, but we need to test, test and test.

( That fatality rate of the flu is 0.1% and the 0.7% number probably reflects a functioning medical system and not a broken medical system which is more likely to be the case for 'just let it happen'.)

                        • "10s of thousands (or 100s of thousands) are dying, people are not going to just go about their normal life"

Why not? 10000 people die in the US every day. If that goes to 20000 people a day for a few weeks (with the marginal deaths coming largely from the old and infirm), and the alternative is for everybody to lock themselves in their houses for months, suffering almost the same total loss of life, then it is simply a symptom of mass hysteria, germaphobia and rampant herd behavior to accept the latter.

The sad fact is that you and most people have been terrified by the pronouncements of a few "experts" operating with insanely unskeptical assumptions and are now locked into the course of action previously decided on even as the evidence mounts that this is nothing more than a bad respiratory infection. The only questions are: how much longer does it take the average person to come to his senses, and whether or not they lynch (figuratively, to be clear) the epidemiologists who instigated this most recent bout of moral panic.

                          Let. It. Happen.

                          • We went on a multi-trillion dollar war over ~3k dead.

People are not rational homo economicus. Things that are 'ordinary' are considered 'OK' (see climate change and the war on drugs). Things that are out of the ordinary are acted upon by disproportionate action that is not a linear function of the 'ordinariness' of the situation.

Epidemiologists are suppose to handle disease, that is where their speciality is. Not economics. Not a nations need. The reason why we now follow them is due to a lack of leadership from those who should have been focused (and experts) on economics and the need of nations. The sooner leadership steps in to combine the various expertise (include economic expertise that recognizes that homo economicus does not exist outside of a few rare communities), the better. This seems unlikely to happen until next January. I am not sure what the excuse is of many of the other western nations (eastern nations do not seem to have the same problem).

                            • WHO stands by guidance that wearing a mask provides no benefit to members of the general public

                              https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/30/world...rnd/index.html

O RLY? Despite the fact that there is ample (though noisy) evidence to suggest that it provides about a 50% reduction in transmission rates for other respiratory diseases among the general public. Thanks, WHO.

Oops, also we overestimated mortality rates from COVID19 by at least 7X and thus terrified the public and the politicians? Thanks, WHO.

Oh, also - remember when they cried wolf over swine flu? Thanks, WHO.

                              • We need air, food, water, shelter, healthcare, security, and education. Our current system (in general) produces **** food, undermines the future ability to produce food, pollutes the air and water, bankrupts you if you need healthcare, misuses security forces against civilians for corporate interests, makes education unaffordable, and unnecessarily restricts shelter and the quality thereof.

Imagine that people aren't so enthused about throwing granny overboard for the system? The irrational thing that people have done is put up with the system so long.
