Video Software

I bought a video camera before my son was born so we could get plenty of footage of him while he is little, but the software that came with the camera sucks. It creates MPEG files from the tape inside the camera, but the quality of the video is crap once it is put into digital format. I know the res won't look as high when viewed on a computer screen, but there are a ton of dropped frames as well.

Does anyone know of some decent video software I could use with my camera?
