  • Problem with changing city improvments

I've just began working on a mod for Civ II. I've got a few techs in, but when i try to change the City Improvments, the game crashs. I'm tring to change the temple to the AI theater. I've got the spacing done so it lines up correctly ,and i've got it pointing to the correct technology to research, and it seems that everything is in order. However, when i start the game, i get this error message.

    Error "City KeyNotFound(City) (Bad RULES.txt)" in module "<Startup>" data: 4 0
    'AI Theater 4, 1, Bai,'

    Most Recent DOS error: 0

Anyone know what to do about this? I would love the help.

You sure you left the comma after 'AI theater'? That is the problem, I'm afraid.

"Bai"? You haven't been changing the codes for the advances have you? You can't change them.

That's right. The biggest problems you can possibly hit in scen building or modpak making is in mucking around with the RULES.txt, especially with the advances.

First off, you MUST NOT change the three-letter codes for each civad. Doing that will cause the game to detect something wrong, and end.

Secondly, you MUST NOT change certain techs in the tree, no matter what. Doing so will cause the game to crash, without even notifying you of what is actually wrong.

Check out the developers' tips at sleague.apolyton.net - I got over the big "badcivad" bump with help from a thread I found there. Someone had the patience to go through every last civad (all 107 of them) and work which ones screw up your game if changed. Go there! Multiply! Be happy!
