Star Control 2. Remember this game? It's a classic.

I recently became obsessed with re-acquiring this game. My original copy, box and all, has mysteriously disappeared... I blame my so-called "friends" who kept "borrowing" it.

I couldn't find any mainstream places selling it, but thankfully there are a few eBay auctions active. (And you vultures reading this better not outbid me!)

Okay, I guess this has nothing to do with Civilization, other than the fact that StarCon2 is almost as great a game (in its own way) as Civ.

    Ah, fond memories....

Well, *I* don't think it's crap. I like the games a lot. Yes, they are really outdated now, and StarCon1 is a pretty limited game. But StarCon2 was an almost perfect blend of adventure game, mystery, combat, and exploration. It was also one of the first games to use 4 channel sound. And, the "script" was very well written -- almost up to Infocom (Zork, etc.) standards.

Also, the Super Melee portion of SC2 (i.e., the space combat game) is playable in its own right. I must've spend hundreds if not thousands of hours playing just that portion of the game in college. Yup, those were the days.

But, you know what they say, ellisd: one man's trash is another man's treasure. To you, SC is trash; to me, it's treasure.

Is this the game with the huge variety of bizarre aliens each with their own special powers??? The object is to find and reactivate an alien vessel or some such??

If so - I recall many a happy hour ....

Scouse Gits, yes, that's a (very roughly) correct description of the game.

I have found an excellent, comprehensive StarCon web site at:
            http://starcontrol.gamestats.com

This site also includes a series of links to places you can buy the game.

I have star control 3 but not 2 or 1. How does three compare to the other two?

Generally, fans of the first two Star Control games do not like SC3. It is considered a pretender to the throne, a failed followup which is not true to the vision of the original games (esp. SC2).

The reason for this is that the designers of SC1 & SC2 did not create SC3. Instead, Accolade (which owns the rights) hired new game desingers, who took the Star Control concept in a new direction.

I haven't played SC3, but from what I've heard, I don't think I would like it. However, the opinions of a bunch of old-fogey SC2 fanatics like me shouldn't detract from your enjoyment of whatever merits SC3 *does* have.

As to the question, would a fan of SC3 enjoy SC1 and SC2? Hard to say. SC1 is really a very simple strategy/combat game which is so primitive (now) that's it not worth playing any more. SC2 added a compelling storyline to the SC1 universe and strategy/combat engine. If you enjoy the Infocom text games like Zork or the adventure games like Hero's Quest, you will enjoy SC2. Also, if you enjoy 2-D space combat among 20+ different alien ships, you'll enjoy the Super Melee portion of SC2.

You do have to remember that SC2 came out in 1992, so the graphics appear considerably dated on today's computers. But I am of the opinion that a great game remains great, even when its technology is overshadowed by later developments. SC2 is such a game.
