  • Game customization/Scenarios

As an avid player and designer of scenarios in Civ2, I'd like to if any of the Civ2 sequels allow for that kind of manipulation of the game files to produce these. No-one and no-where that I know of has yet addressed this. I got bored playing "normal" Civ2, and I doubt that either SMAC or CTP will hold much long-term attraction if we can't customize them. Ditto for TOT.

SMAC has alpha.txt(expanded rules.txt) and the designers aer looking into allowing still *.pcx sprites. It also has a supposedly great map/scenario editors. CtP will definetly have still sprites and an integrated scenario editor.

One thing I noticed about SMACABRD was that all the .txt files were layed out the same as civ2. Everything was right where you expected it to be, and set up just like you're used to.

I play with the .txt files, but the only problem is, nobody can make new units. (I mean grapics.) That's quite a big problem (IMHO). How can anybody do a new scenario without custom units? I know (because I read somewhere) CTP has a possibility to include brand new units with custom graphics.

So I think the CTP is more for the scenario designers. :-)

I'm looking forward to CTP in the hope that it will be better at scenario building, I have Alpha Centauri and unless i'm missing something there seems to be no way to change the unit or terrain graphics, though you have a good deal of customization outside of that. But still, for me to make a good scenario i at least need to be able to change the unit graphics and preferably the terrain as well, especially in Alpha Centauri, unless i always want to make sci-fi scenarios set on a planet remarkably similar looking to Alpha Centauri. So unless they come up with a way to be more customizable it's looking like Alpha Centauri is a good but not great game.
