  • Keeping information updated

While making the new website I come to a new problem. The desing I made is improveds and also it's flexibility and it's more usefull now. The nexyt step is that we keep the site more updated than it is now. There is so much old information on it now that is really outdated or even wrong, that's really no good.

To get it step by step:

News] is very cool. Anyone of us who knows the password can post news here. No need for uploading and stuff, just like a normal forum post. You can try it now, I will delete all the test-messages anyway when the complete site is ready.
I will also update the news system a little so that it's more fool-proof.

Contact. I had the idea to present all the e-mail adresses of the members of our team here. This is usefull not only for visitors, but also for us. When you need an adres, just surf to the contact page and there you go.

The FAQ is good as it is, I have no comment on it. Only we may add some questions here.

The screenshots are not apliable any more. There are 2 screenshots who both show the old map we ever made. Since we are going to use a different view now: should we delete these? I think so.

Programming is also old, but may be usefull. I, as a designer and webmaster, not being a programmer, can't say anything good about the usefullness of these docs. Can any programmer take a very quick look at those and say which ones are usefull and which are obsolete? I think the naming coventions are a very important one for new programmers. Are there any new ones to be added to the programming topic?

Art is really bad. The images presented here are not anything to be seen in our game and of no use. We rather show the opening screen, UI elements and/or some aditional art that is likely to appear in our game. All the images not used ahould be deleted I think. (sorry for the ones who made them... I don't even know. )

Models have to be updated a lot but is needed as it is everything we have realy made suring the last months on design area. (And there are the key elements to implenting the actual features into the game.) We should also include the name of the author so any comments/questions or updates can be adressed to him.
The structure of the docs is also very random, but I can change that myself, with permission from the author. We should also add Joker's desing doc as it is very important as a quick referance and to show new (potentional) members. Joker, can you sent me the latest version you have? Hope so, otherwise I'd use the current one on this forum.

Features is nice, but I don't think it's usefull in the way it is now. What do we want to achieve with it? To fully explain all the things that will feaure in the came or to point out our key features? It's also not very up-to-date and incomplete now. Please explain to me what we want to do with it.

The dowload is also important for new visitors as many of them look for something playable or worj=king to download and see for themselfs. Therfore I see that we need to expand this section a bit. I will make some link with every download (as far as I can) to the forum. The download presented now have to be updated. If the authors of the downloads can send me there latest versions? The UI is very old here. Amjayee and Crisp: can you both send me the latest version, or do you rather wait 'till you both agree with everything both?
The map proto is different from the one wee will use in our game. (I hope I'm right about this, that we decided to make a 2D map now first?) I vote to delete this too.
I am also thinking about a system so that every member that has the correct password can upload files here like the news system.

No comments on search, only that I will make this work (better) when the rest of the site is more complete.

Links is pretty complete. All the GGS-fansites later will get there own section of course.

Whew. I hope you all can help me a little to settle out the most important thing on the site. I am willing to spent pretty much time on keeping all our GGS info updated, but I can't do that without your support.

I hope to present you a new, flexible, usefull and up-to-date site soon.

You are right, the link doesn't work... How strange! ??? This is too weird, when I click my bookmark, it works, but when I click this same link on the forum it doesn't....

Looking for a better server anyhow. I likes SourceForge, but I don't know how to upload there. heardie?

Uploading to sourceforge. Very hard. did I send you a word doc on how to do it? If so and you still cant get it, what erros do you get?

And if all else fails send me a zip (or *.tar, preferable) and I'll upload when ready

And to get the link to work, just copy it into the address bar.

It worked now, when I copy pasted

We should definitely use sourceforge if possible since they will give us much space as we can spend and there are no banners etc. I think I remember uploading to it is not impossible, just that some safety protocol is involved so you must use a special client program or something? I am not sure, but they have help service I think so you two can mail them.

About programming, Naming convention is ok to have, and also Code Design Doc. Just wait with the later, chrispie spoke of modifying it.

Design Doc, and Code Design Doc will probably be changed pretty often.

Links section should have links to clash and Manifest Destiny at least, preferably some more civ projects.
I dont know which you put, link was broke for me.

                    FAQ is probably fine.

                    Contact page is excellent!
People had numerous troubles with finding sourceforge mail subscription pages so the link to that is great.

Also, have you reported us to the search engines? Google, Altavista and such? That should be done too.

                    Good job.

Elmo, is it possible to have the fourm in the main contents part, and the bar still there. SO the link woulld be
                      http://cgi-bin.spaceports.com/~ggs/page.php?page='x'

where 'x' is the GGS forum address/

                      Is this possible?

And if it is, what does everyone think about this idea? I at least think it would be wworth a shot.

                        Uhh, that looks nice.

But please, could you make it fill more on the screen? Like the old website it only fills about half the screen in the width. Why not use it all? That is all the critique I can come up with right now. The site is really cool.

And I agree with you that we should propably make a complete remake of our website, in which we remove all the outdated material and put in the new stuff.

                        FAQ:
Heardie showed me a new FAQ he had made some time ago. And it was good. Seriously, we should merge the two, to make sure the FAQ is as good as it can be.

                        Screenshots:
                        I agree with you.

                        Art:
                        Hmm, well, yeah.

                        Design Doc:
I think that we should make sure that we all agree on everything in the design doc before we put it on our site. I have not made any new version of it, and I am not sure I will have time for it, apart from smaller, fast to do details. My GGS time right now is pretty much reduced to visiting this forum and commenting, plus a few scattered ideas. I am sorry about this (for your and for my own sake), but it is hard to sit down for several hours and write big docs when I live with 9 other people and are surrounded by them all the time, and having something to do pretty much all day long. I am still interested in discussing the doc, but would someone else please take over the updating part?

                        Features:
Yes, I agree. I think we should have a models page with detailed information about the models we have completed or are about to, and then a design doc page, which should replace the features one and be a shorter, more general information page. Obviously each chapter in the design doc should have a link to the appropriate model, if one is available.

                        Search:
Yeah. But could you make it work so it doesn't take you to a different site than ours? There must be some freeware search engine that does that. Is there?

                        Links:
This should just be like in the old site, with links to the other civ games. Only there should be a link to Apolyton as well, and the text in the Activision link should be changed, since CTP2 is now on the market.

Yes, I did write some questions didnt I? Forgot about them.

How about for search we find an existing script and then run it off our own server? That way would be best. I remember Elmo showed me a great PHP page, so he could find one there. Elmo, Ill mail you some more FAQ questions.
