In order for the huts to show up you have to play on Medium or above. I've played a couple games at beginner, easy and medium and saw no difference between beginner and easy (actually easy has been easier than beginner with my last victory coming in 800ad) and only a marginal difference between beginner and medium. Give it a try. In medium you get the huts that add some randomness and you can also randomize the civs you play against so it's not always the same ones over and over.

I always build ASAP, but that's because I play the game aggressively. I like to fill every available nook and cranny as fast as possible, even if it means overlapping city radii. ( In Civ 2 I used to regularly build 60 to 100 cities without conquering any. )

I use the cheat menu to uncover the fog of war and then just to see where to put my first and second city then hit restart. But I only look around my start place not to spoil the game ...

I explore max 3 turns, usually none.

I have to laugh at all you guys.I agree with Anatolia. You guys complain the game is too easy but you still cheat. IF the ai is so pathetic then why cheat at the begining of the game?

also why make your settler or warrior explore the land and then reload the game? why not just go to the cheat menu and then clear the world and for of war off and see where you are instead of wasting all that time exploring. Or did I read your posts wrong?

I usually settle right away, but sometimes I will explore if I am not in a desirable spot. I never explore then reload.

I always settle the first round, with one exception: if my settler is next to a river I'll move it to the river and settle there.

I always start making warriors to explore. If you play it right you can have your first warrior in about 5-7 turns (depending on terain)

I always try to get at least one hut before settling down. The idea is to explore with another unit while the city is doing its first build. Hate to just have wait for a build with no unit to move
