  • PBEM TEAM CHALLENGE - Looking for players

    Alright, here's the format...

I am planning on setting up a PBEM game. The format is slightly different than what has been done before. Here's the gist of it.

    Eight Players - Eight Civs
There will be 4 teams. These teams will keep a permanent alliance throughout the game. Object of the game is to either destroy all opponents or have the highest composite score at the end of the game. Each player is encouraged to work with his teammmate to bring this about, so communication via email/phone/snail mail (whatever you can do) is strongly encouraged.

To keep the game moving, teammates will be able to play each other's turn, if a player cannot play his turn for a particular reason (unexpected work, vacation, or other reason). Just email your turn to your teammmate on the date in question - (and post on-site here at Apolyton).

    The setup is this:
    Map size: Gigantic
Map features: (to be determined, except the following - Trade goods will be at the lowest setting)
    World Shape: Doughnut

We will be using Sophanthro's Qucker setup
i.e. Five settlers with increased movement, super scouting unit and transport, 5000 gold and 5000 PW, so you will need to have Sophantho's setup, as well as, Dutcheese's Scenario loaded to play. (Much thanks to Sophanthro for a great PBEM setup) I think you can download it from this site.

Turn order will be one of the following setups, and is open to discussion to the participants.

    Option 1
    Team 1 - first, fifth
    Team 2 - second, sixth
    Team 3 - third, seventh
    Team 4 - fourth, eighth

    Option 2
    Team 1 - first, eighth
    Team 2 - second, seventh
    Team 3 - third, sixth
    Team 4 - fourth, fifth

This will be a cooporative effort - i.e. no turning on your teammate.

I have one team already (Assyrians/Hebrews)- that will be available to play on Mon-Fri 9:00 - 11:00 EST, weekends will be flexible.

I need three more teams. Ideally, we need one or two teams that can play during the morning/afternoon EST (so this is a good opportunity for European players) Also, it will help scheduling if your teammate can play the same time that you are able to - so schedule problems can be minimized.

IMPORTANT - I am looking for dedicated players who will be able to commit to a schedule. Remember, teammates can do your turn, so this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

This is open to the first three TEAMS that email or post here. Post your team members, email addresses, civs desired, and leader names.

Single players who post here will be put on a waiting list, so post as a TEAM to get the available slots.

    My email is hexagonia@yahoo.com
PLEASE SEND ALL EMAILS TO THAT ACCOUNT, AS THE ACCOUNT LINKED TO THE ICON AT THE TOP OF THIS POST IS NO LONGER IN USE.

The offer is open until Nov. 28th. I want to be able to start in the beginning of December but I need 4 teams to play.

Neat Idea wish I had time to play.

BTW the credit for my Quicker Setup, goes to Dutcheese I really just changed some values and SLIC attributes.

I don't think you can get Quicker Setup from Apolyton (haven't checked), If you want it go to

      www1.50megs.com/ctp

      Sophanthro

P.S. To run the scenario you will either need Dutcheeses Units or Download the replacement files from www1.50megs.com/ctp

Instead of looking for 8 players...
What do you think about this ?
Four players. Each players play two civilizations. Exemple:
        player 1: civ 1 and civ 8
        player 2: civ 2 and civ 3
        player 3: civ 4 and civ 5
        player 4: civ 6 and civ 7

(Player 1) will have civ 1 and 8 because, he'll play first and so have and advantage.

            Slamp,

I'm leaning toward the 1-5, 2-6, 3-7, 4-8 turn format. Past experience with turn-based games has shown that if a team gets 2 consectutive attacks against a single opponent from a team before that opponent has a chance to either reinforce/counterattack, it can really affect the balance of power. Ideally, all turns should be simultaneous, but that isn't the way CTP is set up, so I'm striving for the fairest approach. The player who goes first will always had an advantage with initiative - I guess I don't want them to have more of an advantage.

As for teams vs single players, there are several reasons why I'm going this route. One has to do with a problem that is happening in the two PBEM games I am in. I really enjoy them, and I strive to do my turns as quickly as I get them. But the game can only go as fast as the slowest player. Currently, I am averaging about 1 - 1.5 turns per week in both of the games I am in. I do realize that other players have things/problems that come up, and I'm trying to not get frustrated with the long wait between turns (which is hard when you are expecting a turn to come and it doesn't). My PBEM setup is an attempt to reduce that problem, as teams are responsible to get their turns out, as opposed to single players. If a player cannot do his turn, he can forward it to his teammate, give some instructions for movement, and allow the game to continue to move forward. I hope that all teams realize the benefit of doing this.

Plus this is an opportunity for players who might be intimidated to play against a human opponent - to 'get their feet wet' in the PBEM experience. There is a certain safety in numbers. Diplomacy will still be occuring in this games, as you will still be dealing with human opponents.

I reallly expect there to be some interesting strategy in this game - Remember, there are now 2 minds working toward a common goal as opposed to one. Players who do things a certain way might have their eyes opened to something new because of working with another player. The posts about the Improved AI work being done by Nordicus/WesW and others is fascinating because you have several people working toward solving a particular problem, and I see that working in a game setting.

Nevertheless, your suggestions are good - maybe there are players who are willing to play the game in your setup. I hope you will reconsider playing as a team. You've been on-site here for a long time and I respect your opinions.

              Here's the result so far,

              1 team set (Assyrian/Hebrew) Playing time 9:00 - 11:00 PM EST

2 single players looking for teammates
              Greek - Playing time 12:00 - 2:00 PM EST
              Irish - Playing time 7:00 - 11:00 PM EST
(these times need to be confirmed)

If I cannot get 4 teams then I will take individuals to play 2 civs. This is with the understanding that if you decide to do this, you have to make an effort to get your turns out in a timely manner.

Turnaround time of 24 hours max. between each player's turn. Obviously, this is not a hard and fast rule. I want to follow a schedule, so players will know when to look for their turns. Please be courteous to other players and email them if you cannot get them their turn by the appointed time or if there will be a delay, or at least post on-site here so the rest of the players know what's happening.

You will need Patch 1.2, Dutcheese's Modpack 7.0, both of which I think can still be downloaded from Apolyton (check Downloads on the ctp splash page)

Make sure you look at the readme file, as you need to manually place several files in the proper folders.

For the Quicker Scenario, download from the location that is listed in Sophanthro's post in this thread. Make sure after unzipping the Quicker file, that you place the files in the Scenarios folder too.

No other mods are needed - that means that your CTP game shouldn't have any altered files such as CDs mod, Improved AI, etc. (although you can have the Apolyton Pack, since that is also a scenario)

email me with any other questions.

                  Only two teams to go...

                  Sotirus/Mark
Becuse your schedule flexibilty is compatible and since you both registered first, I might team you both up. I will not do that yet, as I am waiting to see who else will register, either as single players or teams. But consider yourself in - if I get teams to register, you will be a team, if single-players register, you will be paired according to schedule issues. Hopefully we can get this all resolved in the next week or so. I am looking at a start time of about a week after I get the final team committments, as this will allow you to plan a strategy.

Slamp: I emailed you with a suggestion for a teammmate.

3 tentative teams at this point - we will need one more.

                    Myself/Phil - Assyrians/Hebrews
                    Rowick/unnamed teammate - Vikings/???? civ to pick
                    Sotirus/Mark - Greek/Irish

Slamp is currently looking for a teammate.

The final opening will go to the first team who registers or to the first individual who will be willing to team up with slamp.

I want to begin the game on Friday, Nov 26th

More info as it comes in...

                          4 teams
                          Myself/Phil - (Assyrian/Hebrew) Times playing - 7-11PM EST
                          Rowick/teammate (Viking/????) Times playing - 3-8 AM EST
                          Mark/Sotirus (Irish/Greek) Times playing - 10 AM -3 PM EST
                          DON/Lung (Germans???/English???) - NEED TIMES!!!

Don/Lung - I don't buy it for a second that you will not be a threat in this game, as I read your posts in the PBEM game that you are currently in when discussing whether you both would be in this game

                          __________________________________________________ ______

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE DUTCHEESES MOD/QUICKER MOD ON YOUR SYSTEM, AND THAT THEY ARE WORKING CORRECTLY. THIS TEAM GAME WILL NOT START UNTIL EVERONE IS PROPERLY SET UP AND HAS NOTIFIED ME.

Patch 1.2 needs to be installed first.

                          1. Make sure that you unzipped Dutcheese into the Activision/Civilization - Call to Power folder.

                          2. Go into the Activision/Civilization - Call to Power/Scenarios folder and see if you have a folder called Dutcheese - if so, good. If not, do a file search to locate the folder - There are several folders with the name Dutcheese - the one that goes into the Scenario folder will have file folders named scen0000, scen0001 and so forth.

                          3. Go to the Activision/Civilization - Call to Power/ctp_data/default/gamedata folder. In there you will find a folder named dutcheese. In that folder are 3 files - messageicon.txt, uniticon.txt and units.txt. Take those files and replace the ones (Make sure you made a backup of those files) with the same name that are located in in the Activision/Civilization - Call to Power/ctp_data/default/gamedata folder. Dutcheese supplies a copy of those replaced files, I think, but make sure anyhow.

                          4. Go to the Activision/Civilization - Call to Power/ctp_data/english/gamedata folder. In there you will see another dutcheese folder. In that folder is a file called strings.txt - Take that file and replace the one with the same name (before replacing, back up the file that is to be replaced) that is located in the Activision/Civilization - Call to Power/ctp_data/english/gamedata folder.

                          5. Quicker can be unzipped and placed in the Activision/Civilization - Call to Power/Scenarios folder. No other files need to be moved/replaced.

                          __________________________________________________ ______

Forgive me for being repetitive, but one of the current PBEM games that I am playing is having problems, due to the fact that the Scenarios haven't been loaded correctly, and I want to avoid that issue.
                          __________________________________________________ ______

I need final confirmations of the above info concerning playing times/civs/leader names, so I can set up the final playing schedule.
Please email that info back to me ASAP. Failure to do so will open the game for other teams.

I also want to be able to email to you sometime this weekend the game settings, schedule and rules, so you will have all that before starting. I would like to start on Friday, November 26, but I will not start unless everyone is on the same page...

I found this in this thread "Starting semi accelerated pbem game" by Sophanthro.

                            ---------------------------------------------
"All of these modifications require no changes to the text files if your running Dutcheese's Mod, In fact you don't need any files from me (unless you want to host(start) a game using these modifications, Then you'll need my Scenario will be downloadable soon. I'll post when it is.) For noiw email me and email you a copy.

If you don't have Dutcheese's Scenario Pack 7, you'll have to download it."
                            ---------------------------------------------

Does this mean we don't need this mod if we have the dutchcheese mod and are not hosting?

BTW...The only threat around here is lung, and thats mainly to his own civ>

It's my understanding that you don't need Soph's Scenario - just Dutcheese's if you are not hosting. I haven't tested playing a game without Soph's Scenario on my system (mainly because its such a hassle to reload game when something screws up) However, to test opening strategies, you will need Soph's Scenario. - and frankly, I want to make sure that everyone can play the game with their setup - instead of having to wait because of file incompatibilities.
