  • Game Rules

I'm posting this thread to discuss of all the team votes on the DG rules that we need to discuss, some possibly for the sake of a team vote, others definitely for such.

UnO, I understand you want to put up our vote for sale, but there are a few areas where I think we should actually vote.

How to choose civs - team vote upcoming on this following the linked poll.

The type of game - PitBoss or PBEM, basically.

What rules? This is the most fundamental one discussing what overarching rules should be in place.

I think it's important not to use PitBoss unless it seems stable and reliable by the time we start. It should definitely be out of Beta (which is starting to look doubtful to me if we're still going for a mid-January start).

Not sure it's all that important to us how civs are chosen, though I personally think choosing several to be submitted to admins would be best.

The rules themselves are another discussion, and probably are going to be discussed on a person-to-person level anyway. I imagine the team structure will only come into play for a final approval vote.

My trial runs of the pitboss beta have been, let's call em less than stellar. I'm against it.

      Civ Choosing is decided already.

Choosing Civs: I think we should vote for the Preferential List so that we can get a civ we like.

MP Settings: Level Prince, so that things aren't too easy/fast paced and goody huts don't yield gamebreakers. We should vote against Always War, since that basically means we need to scrap the mercenary idea; but whether to vote for or against permanent alliances, I'm not sure. I think it would be in our interest to vote against, since that keeps all our potential clients seperated.

That's all I see really applying to Merc. My personal votes would be all victory conditions on, city flipping and razing on, and neither Always War nor Permanent Alliances, but those are just my own preferences.

Game Speed: I'd say Normal, but I probably could be convinced to go with Quick.

Starting Era: Ancient. Leaves all UUs open and lets the early decisions about what to go for play out normally.

Map Choice: I'd say we should vote for Continents first. After that I'm not sure.

Map Design: Either previewed or slightly customized/balanced, I think.

Map Size: For this many teams, I think we need Standard. But no larger please, I doubt my computer could take it later in the game.

I agree with most everything Kloreep suggested.

I do have a reservation about the game speed being set to faster than Normal, however. Specifically due to military units going obsolete so fast, which I see being a problem for us.

As far as map type is concerned, I think it would be more fun to go with custom continents set to random number.

Am very much against always war. It takes away from the game IMO.

I'll place a vote tomorrow unless there are objections:

              On the MP settings:

              Barbs Normal
              Level, Prince
              No Permanent Alliances
              Tech Trading on (duh)
              City razing on
              City Flipping Normal
              Victory Conditions: for sale.

              Speed/Era:

              Normal Speed
              Ancient start

              Map ranking:

              1 Terra
              4 Pangea
              5 Custom Continents, Random number
              2 Archipelago
              3 Lakes

              Map Design:
              Slightly Custom/Balanced

              Map Size:
              Normal

              Map resources:
              Normal

Any disagreement, and I'll not vote on that particular issue until more discussion.

So what changed your mind from a terra map being the one map we should avoid to it being the preferred map? I would rather not play on one at all.

We have to rank all map sizes so here's my suggestion:

                  4 Normal
                  3 Small
                  2 Random
                  1 Large

Actually UnO listed it as the least preferred its just that he took Snoopy's list and added numbers to the left.

UnO's rankings might easier be read like this:

                    5 Custom Continents, Random number
                    4 Pangea
                    3 Lakes
                    2 Archipelago
                    1 Terra

I disagree with these rankings. I don't really see Terra as that much different than Pangea. Everyone starts out on one continent. (Good for making contact with all Civs). The only addition is the uninhabited new world (which gives us a place to expand if we end up getting pinned down in the old world).

                    I personally would vote:

                    5 Terra
                    4 Pangea
                    3 Custom Continents, Random number
                    2 Lakes
                    1 Archipelago

But since there are some who object to Terra I would be content with:

                    5 Custom Continents, Random number
                    4 Pangea
                    3 Terra
                    2 Lakes
                    1 Archipelago

I don't really see Lakes as being very high in the voting but if it was to win I think doing an inland sea would be an interesting twist.

oh, I thought the "1" next to Terra indicated the first in order of preference.

The cramped start location on a Terra map would severely hinder our chances, unless another team gives us a reason to retaliate. Pangaea allows for more early expansion as compared to Terra.

As polarnomad says, Terra maps are somewhat cramped on the starting continent. I'd prefer to see straight pangea, or better yet, continents. Pangea would be okay for us, but the game would likely be decided through war before we even got through much of the tech tree; I'd rather see Continents give us some naval battles and a longer game.

SO it appears our only things left to decide are on map type and size.

Everyone, please rank your preference in those two categories, 5 being the best, 1 being the worst. I'll come back and add up t see a winner, and post the rank as our vote on Monday.
