  • keeping it civil

I'm new to the forums as a poster, but I've been visiting as a guest for several months now. I justed wanted to comment on the civility of the forums.

I've noticed a couple of times people shooting other people's ideas down without giving reasons as to why. Besides just being rude, this doesn't contribute anything intelligent to the discussion.

Please give your reasons so that collectively we can come up with better solutions than we could individually. We've already seen some ideas influence Firaxis, and these have usually been joint works. Yes to constructive criticism. No to insults.

Also, if you don't think something is relevant, you can ignore it or just not read it. You don't have to trash it as stupid. It may be relevant to someone else. That's the beauty of this, you only have to respond to what you're interested in.

    Thanks!

This site is infinitely more civil than certain others i have visited. Basically, it's the most civilised site i've ever seen! After all, it is a 'civilisation' site, so it *should* be civil

We also have "Trolls", which are basically self-appointed jesters whose purpose is to deflate people who appear to be too certain of themselves.

I assume you may be referring to Alexander's Horse. He's the Troll King. Or Troll Emperor, by post count.

This is indeed the most civil site I've ever visited.

Sometimes ideas are rejected because, if you stay here long enough, you can see the same concept resurrected so many times you lose any netiquette.

Some people jump in and don't read anywhere (not to the FAQ, not to The List, not to Relevant Threads...). I bet also MarkG and DanQ forget old proposal or miss some thread, but it's difficult to forgive someone emerging from nowhere shouting: I have the GREATEST idea of every time for Civ: add horde of grasshopper devastating crop fields until you discover a DDT legion unit able to spray them to death. Or something like that.

Damn you Naismith, you posted my DDT-warrior idea before I could. Bastard!!

As long as you stay out of the OT, these forums are pretty sedate, though topics can sometimes get repetitive and that can get annoying when for the 5 time in a month someone comes in and starts a new post asking for "more diplomacy options" something real vague and never even read the previews that say that this is already being put into the game.

Along those lines let me be a repetitive schmuck for a second

BRING BACK ELVIS IN CIV3 !! Sorry, couldn't resist, that post is almost becoming a knee-jerk kinda thing for me

Looking at it again, I have to agree - this is one of the best forums out there. I guess some of the time people say things that are inside jokes that I don't get, so to me it looks insulting. Live and learn I guess.

I can see how frustrating it can be to have the same issues raised over and over again. I've read the "great library" stuff, but I think for some new people, the site isn't that easy to navigate. Posting a link usually helps a lot.

for instance, I'm not great at navigating this site, I've pretty much stuck to the most recent civ3 posts. The FAQ I get, but what is 'relevant threads'? also, is there a way to get better results from the search engine?

                        Thanks!

Coming in here, telling us we're uncivil. Like some kind of punk.

I know it's really difficult to add fresh idea, after a 500+ pages of List and years of posts

Better Firaxis goes gold with Civ III, so we can change topics: Civ IV, The List can be a good start
