  • Advanced Tech Tree

I think we all, as veteran players, agree that the game setup should be highly customizable.

I'm assuming that "Blind Research" will be one such option.

But I'd like to propose another. "Complex Research Tree" which could only be used in conjunction with "Blind Research."

Under the Complex Research Tree, most techs would have two levels. For example, there would be regular Iron Working, but also Advanced Iron Working, which the Civ could develop after first having developed Iron Working. The Advanced level of the tech would provide certain benefits, such as refined versions of units, unique Improvements, or even some Wonders.

For example, the Pyramids might only be available to a Civ that developed Advanced Masonry--not just to any Civ that learned to make a brick. A Stonehenge or Chichen Itza wonder--both implemented in CTP but with nonsensical functions--might only be possible with Advanced Astronomy.

If the Complex Research Tree was disabled, though, the special units would be unavailable and the Improvements and Wonders would be available with the regular versions of the Advances.

I would also say that if blind research is an option, then the player should not be allowed to simply choose what directions research will take. That should be dictated by the administration choices of the civilization. For example, if you're building a lot of military units and fighting a lot of battles, then your research is going to lean toward the Military applications. If you are building lots of libraries and religious improvements, then your research is going to lean toward philosophy and pure knowledge. The building and unit choices should dictate what research your people are best at.

What if certain of the 'advanced' technologies were only available to certain civilisations or could only be reasearched once - all other civilisations would have to trade if they wanted to obtain it? Hence if you needed an advanced version of masonry to build the pyramids then only the civ that discovered advanced masonary could build them - they could keep the technology secret until they had been built. This would be good as an advanced option - it would lead to more tensions (if someone refused to give an advanced technique) and more unqiue civs - which i think is something everyone wants.

Yeah, and add Advanced Telecommunications in there, too, to take advantage of The Internet. This would include cell Phones, pagers, fax machines, broadbandwith; etc.
