  • Clear the road!

    I'm always frustrated when some stupid caravan (or other unit) of a friendly civ is blocking my roads and I cannot move my troops to wherever they're urgently needed. I event started wars because of this!
    I think there should be a command (similar to expell) that would allow a military unit to 'clear the road' in front of it. The result shall be that the obstructing unit is moved off the road, clearing the way for your units.
    When issued on other civ's territory, a minor diplomatic incident might happen. Whitin your own territory, no incident.

    Perhaps a solution could be that you'd be able to put your unit in the same square with non-militaristic units of other civs. You don't have to allies, but you can't be at war.

    So:
    *Allies: ALL units can share squares, can go in other civs' cities.

    *Peace: a unit can move into the square of another civ's non-military unit. A non-military unit can move into the square of a militaristic unit.

    *war: can't share squares.

      Ultrasonix, I agree with your "common, good sense" suggestion.

      BTW, if trade will be done by a trade screen, we will have less of this kind of encounter on the roads...

        There still remains the problem of settlers.
        If a settler was moving along a road, could a military unit "expel" it?

        BTW, I think that caravans should be able to be in the same square as a forign military unit, provided that contact exists between the two civs and that they are not at war.

          From my idea above, as long as you're not at war with the settler's civ, your military can SHARE a square with ANY non-military unit, so you'll just walk right over the settler's square.

              Because they are almost in permanent state of war!

              If you are at peace, a roman legion will leave any civilian group alone (may be they'll ask/steal some money/goods, they surely had a different idea about property ).

                Ultrasonix, i agree wiht your idea but i would like to add one thing.
                - Limitation of foreign military presens. It becomes really annoying when two of your allies starts fighting right in the middle of your empire. And in SMAC it really feels scary when an ally move around loads of armys (and you know that it can breake the alliance at anytime). To avoid this problem every soverign country should be able to determine how many military units they can tolerate from another player (you can still move around units, but it will be an violation of your agreements if you don't respect the limits). Also, agreements can be made even with non-allies (as long as you don't are at war).

                  Allowing troups from a civ to cross your territory to fight another civ can be considered an act of war by the second one.

                    Defining "crossing your civ" may be a tad hard - what happens if they walked straight in, and out? So maybe when a civ crosses you borders, the civ that they're attacking has to warn you first at the end-of-turn, and only then are they allowed to consider it an act of war.

                      You should be able to stack war units with allies and you should be
                      able to stack War units (tanks) with Peace Units (Diplomat, Caravan) with civs you are at peace with

                        Just how many non-combat units are there? There's terraformers, diplomats/spies, and caravans, no? The existence of these units depends entirely on how terrain improvements, diplomacy/espionage, and trade are implemented. Depending on what Sid does, this may be a total non-issue.

                        With regard to stationing your military in someone else's empire, SMAC had a perfectly acceptable solution: when you declare war against someone, all your units in his empire are immediately relocated to your nearest city. Unrealistic, yes, but so is being able to move an armored division into someone's capital without his permission. What I just do is put all those units next to the border and wait for the green flag.
