How to get the start locations right?

I'm relatively new to civ 3 and checked out all the different world maps and read posts about how people get the right starting location for each civ.

I tried around a bit with some program (CPT).

Could someone tell me clearly and idiot-proofily how i can get the right start locations on a world map?
