  • What's With Adam Smith?

Posting here because i'm seeing this for the first time in a multiplayer game.

Under my communist government, I had built many city improvements. Seeing my maintenance costs go up, I decided to build Adam Smith's. After the Wonder was built, I went to build lots of improvements with a 1 maintenance, so i could save some money. However, later i was surprised to see my costs rising again sharply. I checked the trade advisor and saw that Barracks were costing me 2 gold each. It read, 11 barracks...22 gold.

Now barracks was the only 1 maintenance improvement that showed up as 2 maintenance on the trade advisor. The others, such as librarys and coastal fortresses i wasn't paying for because of Adam's as expected.

If it matters, the settings were 2x production 1x movement. king level.

Do barracks cost 2 maintenence now for some reason? Am i missing something?

    From civ2readme.txt:

</font>The maintenance cost for the Barracks improvement increases by one gold each time it is rendered obsolete by a civilization advance. When first constructed the cost is one gold. After the discovery of Gunpowder and the Barracks is rebuilt it costs two gold. Finally, after the discovery of Mobile Warfare and the Barracks is rebuilt the cost is
    three gold.

I think the costs of barracks goes up with the second round you have to build.

      [edit] apparently I thought right.

I knew you guys would have the answer. Thanks, but this changes my gameplan a little bit as i was carelessly building barracks everywhere.

glad to know the reason, thanx for the help.

Also, this gives Sun Szu's greater value to me.

I don't think it matters how many times you actually build one, as it says:
"The maintenance cost for the Barracks improvement increases by one gold each time it is **rendered obsolete by a civilization advance**."

So after gunpowder they will cost 2 even if it is the first one you have built if my understanding is correct

A fine point, and a valuable distinction. One might have readily thought that one could avoid the increase by not building any early barracks.
