    I'm home...

That's a pretty tough regime you have at home, Eddy! No chance of building SoL and revolt?

Seriously, how about another night then? Your wife has done some compromising lately, maybe it's your turn? (I can't believe I wrote that! )

    Either way let us know.

Size-5 city can only use 10 effective luxury 'diamonds'. If you have between 13-24 cities, your city won't celebrate. Search in strategy for happiness. Should be mentioned by some one before.

That's why HG and democracy with courthouse are important in WLTPD.

Sorry that it is too late to be of help.
You really want to take me seriously?

Ya the roit factor kicks in.

Although i have seen a wierd game before, i had 70 trade in my size 8 cap and it wouldn't celebrate at 100% luxeries in dem. I had 7 other cities and i had temples coluseum and marketplace + bank + HG and collosus in my cap. I couldn't get more then 3 people happy. Every other city in my empire had nearly every single person in the city happy. There is no way that my cap shouldn't have been all happy people. I believe there is a bug somewhere in civ that deals with happyness

          Carolus Rex and Eddy:

I return from holidays on the 24th (thursday). Any chance of continuing our game on any/all of Friday, Saturday or Sunday the 25th, 26th or 27th? (I believe all three are good for me). I may not get online again before Thurday though so if I am slow responding that is why.

Looking forward to continuing , even though I am,

Some cities sometimes won't celebrate. I think it's because one have too many cities and that particular city has too many unhappy citizens from that. This penalty is often applied to the city the settler has originated from.
If you want to use a WLTPD strategy you should not build too many cities.

To make it even more confusing for you i'll give it a shot........
How to set up a LAN with a laptop and a desktop computer
Ok you need a ethernet card for each of those computers the best kind to get for the laptop is a "pcmcia ethernet card" it slides into a slot on the side you can pick one up for 50-150$US depending on the quality. It should autodetect it when you put it in the laptop its quite easy. for the desktop computer you can get a ethernet card cheap (I can find them for about 20-50$US but you have to open up your case and install it into your computer its not that hard ask the computer store for directions if you need help-its pretty easy though just slide the card into an empty slot close the computer up and boot up and windoze95 or 98 will ask you for the driver CD (or floppy disk) and your good to go. Your going to need a thing called a "hub" the cables coming out of the back of the computers will have to be plugged into this for them to talk to each other im not sure how much one costs cuz I have 2 of them so i never needed to buy one. And also you need 2 pieces of cable get the kind called "RJ45" its the best and easiest to deal with. Now you'll have to configure IPX/SPX network protocol on the computers (ipx is the best for games on a LAN but doesent work over the internet you use tcp/ip for that) right clcik on net. neighborhood and select properties> click add>then double click protocol>select microsoft>then IPX/SPX-compatiable Protocol> then click OK youll need your windows disk- do this for both computers youll have to restart. when you do start a mpciv2 game and volia! youre networked!

Thanks for that extensive explanation! I have an ethernet card (the size of a VISA card) already installed in my laptop. Next step seems to be buying a network card for my desktop.

One question. The ethernet card cable I'm using now to my laptop is a digital one (meaning that it contains fiber optics I suppose?).

Do I need a similar one (instead of one containing metal) to my desktop's network card or is that what the "hub" is for (i.e. making them compatible)?

                SH,

I don't think Eddy will be available any time soon. I'll ICQ you the details.

Not to confuse things, but I don't think that you need a hub to connect 2 computers. All you need is 2 ethernet cards and a "cross-over" RJ-45 (?) ethernet cable. A crossover cable is wired slightly differently on one end, but the connection/fitting is the same. While the software end of a Mac would be different, I think the hardware is similar. I connected two Macs to make a Civ LAN in this fashion. The only thing between the computer ether net cards is the cross-over cable; a bit cheaper than a hub! Now if you want 3 or more computers on the same LAN, then you MUST have a hub and regular cable.

Carolus, I am now back from holidays, yet no response from you re:Eddy. (But I can guess what news you may have to pass on to me )

I am still available to play at some time over the next three days. Please ICQ or post if you would like to play. (I think we have a "duel" LOL that we are in the process of playing?)

note to uninformed readers: Sparrowhawk despises the idea of duels, Carolus Rex being the accomodating sort, modified his strategy accordingly, lol.

Let me know either way please,

I understand that you can use a crossover cable but I never have also someone told me they can be flaky sometime (but that person was trying to get me to make one of my own outta regular cable) As I said I have a few 16 port hubs laying around (My friend works for SUN so they throw out the coolest stuff on sundays) so I never needed to go the crossover route
