I really wanted to let this go, but I saw that this thread increased from 12 posts to 33(!) just while I was at work. I sent Chegitz a PM telling him that after some thought, I'm assuming that he had a bad day and I'll let bygones be bygones. To quote:

But...

I've got to wonder about a moderating system that has decided that talking too much (spamming) is more serious than a death threat and should be dealt with in a harsher manner. Both Ming and MtG have told me that it isn't a serious matter, with MtG going so far as saying "I've had a lot bigger things than words pointed my direction," which somehow is supposed to reassure me. But, let Dookie and, say, PH "chat" in a thread and they get 2 weeks vacation.

Am I missing something here?

JohnT... If you really consider that single post a real threat
After receiving your PM, I looked into it. I sure as heck didn't see a "real" death threat. There was no build up of anger... no dripping fangs... just a simple wise arse response to your posts. (and you were baiting him) I posted a response for him to chill, and left it at that. That's all his post was worth. If you want to make a big deal out of it... fine. But I'm sorry, my opinion is different than yours. That was in no way a "real" death threat.

Don't expect the mods to intervene when a death threat is made. I've had two made to me by what others might consider respectable posters (with a bit of thinking you'll be able to work out who). I won't say names but they know who they are; all this for a little subtle teasing on an internet forum. Some people shouldn't be so wound up about what happens here.

The second one, which I received a week or so ago was what caused me to stop posting here. When people can make death threats on forums (it wasn't even in a PM) and not be stopped from posting for it, and yet I can get banned for a few very short posts, something is wrong with the way the forums are run.

I get the feeling whether you get banned or not is more down to who you and your friends are than what you do.

No time to search the world around, cos you know where I'll be found.

Uhhhhh, it might possibly occur to you that we don't have enough time to read every single word of every single post on every single thread? I didn't see it, and you didn't tell me about it, otherwise, I would have taken a look at it, and decided if (about 98% probability) action was warranted.

Apparently, since you included me in that comment. I haven't banned anyone for any significant time for spamming - and then only if they are spamming someone else's thread, warned to stop, and don't.

I looked at the post, and decided it didn't rise to the level of a real threat, and even you admit the post was totally out of character. I don't publicly discuss private communications with posters, ever, but I have made it clear in the past that I may talk to people privately about things that happen on the forum, and decide if anything is warranted. Under different circumstances, I might decide a post like that required some action.

My remark wasn't intended to reassure you. It was intended to let you know that I didn't evaluate the post as being serious, and maybe you ought to step back, look at the poster, look at the post, and figure it was maybe just an angry or sarcastic remark that came off badly.

I was going to go back and edit my "threat," but one, I thought it was obviously sarcastic (D'oh!), and two, my DSL chose that moment to go down and not come up again for over a day. Since it was on page two when I came back, I let it drop.
