My theory is that if you have a custom title, it doesn't matter, since the title won't change due to your post count.

Well, yeah, but I already had this title when the new titles were first introduced, and I was quite interested in them at that time, even though I wouldn't be carrying any one of them.

      Several suggestions:

      1. Keep the current system, but count the posts only made in the on-topic forums.

      2. Let those who want a rank based on post counts keep them, but also let those who don't care have their own title (e.g. Troll Slayer ).

      3. Drop automatic post counts. Only count those posts marked as worthy by moderators.

By mah stars n' garters, ah think Ming may has changed mah mind!

A post can also be seen as an "interaction" with the Apolyton community. There are quite a few people who registered before 2-15-99 but rarely show up on these forums anymore (such as the recent re-appearance of History049 and Orcus). There are also recent arrivals (Ralf on the civ3 forums) whose posts carry a great deal of weight with the locals. Who should get a better title? Wouldn't matter if they didn't care, but what if they did?
Number of posts~level of involvement with Apolyton. Even the spammers. I've moved from against posts to indifferent. It's not my hassle anyway. It's MarkG's and Ming's.

          A few ideas:

          1. Get rid of post counts but keep the ranks, make the ranks based only on how long you've been here. (e.g. those before Feb. '99 - Diety, those over 2 years - Emporor, those over 18 mo. - King, etc.)

The next two suggestions are ways to deal with people that get a lot of spam complaints.

          2. Freeze the complainants post count, either permanently, or for an extended period, say 3-6 months. Or, just set their count permanently at 0.

          3. If spammers like huge post counts, give them huge counts. The first person (complainant) gets 500,000,000, the next 499,000,000, the next 498,000,000, and so on. With the nearest person 1,000,000 posts away there is effectively no more competition, they will be dieties forever, and there is no reason to post to "get ahead" or "prevent others from catching up"

Hmm... although only 40% of the respondants so far have been in favour of keeping the post counts... if only 15 people bother enough to voice their opinion on this, maybe it's not all that important after all.

It IS important. I'm famous for being one of the worst spammers, and I'd rather abolish post counts than keep them. That's mostly because I hate it to be a rejected troll, just because of one of a passion that is caused by an unresistable temptation - the post count (augmentation).

Abolsih it or you'll have to bother with spammers for the rest of this forum's history.

AND THIS IS MERELY AN OBSERVATION AND NOT A CHILDISH THREAT!!!

Keep it. I just like it.

I do not care about titles , registration dates , post counts or any other way to attempt to measure a person's worth by numbers . Judge by what is said in the post and decide they are either a good person or not so good. Keep it simple.

I come here simply for reading and information and to see some comments from certain people. That is all. Nothing else canbe done here to influence my reasons for coming.

Do away with everything. Works for me.

I think we oughto keep post counts and ranks. I like those titles and, is it says in the faq, it gives a "civish" feel to the forum .

I've never had any problems with people who spammed because of/for/against/whatever post counts. I even haven't ecountered one yet...

I say get rid of them, but then again I'm a lowly Settler so what do I know?

I'm not sure about switching the rankings to reg. dates though - as was mentioned earlier a person who registered a year ago but has only visited twice could end up with a higher rank than someone who registered 3 months ago but has been contributing contantly.

I say have 1 rank - Apolytoner, Apolyton Poster or something. I have posted on boards that don't have any ranks for the normal posters and they receive healthy amounts of posts regardless.

                            My humble contribution.

                              Winston:

I like the system the way it is now — why? Partly out of tradition and partly from the even-handedness the mods and admins have, for the most part, shown in the management of Apolyton. I do, however, like the idea of temporarily/permanently freezing post counts for those who truly abuse the system. Which is rare, IMHO.
