Like I mentioned in a thread a couple of weeks back, the post counts work as a behaviour reinforcer of some sort for people to post. There are some threads where you might be deciding whether to post in or not, but since it increases your post count, your response might be "what the heck...let's just do it!"

If you compare discussion boards which have a post count and those that don't, you'll notice that the former category has a larger pool of regular posters. And it's largely for the reasons above.

Lefty - Well, I hardly live for the thread count, but sometimes it *does* help in understanding or interpreting a post to know if the person is relatively new or an old hand (at the boards, not the game).

And sometimes, you learn who is double-logged when they know too much about the boards as a Settler.

If I see what seems to be a odd question or comment, it makes a difference whether the person is Ming (with a gazillion posts) or GALACTICUS THE NEW CIV MASTER OF YOU ALL (with 2 posts)...

cavebear: But the suspected DL could be the ultimate lurker, patiently scanning the forums for two years and suddenly deciding to make a post. That's why I reckon a lurker-watch and -count would be quite revealing.

. Remember (cardboard and plastic) (yes I am That old) risk, where most player would bash their heads in trying to hold continents and then the LURKER, with impecable timing would roll out of some dismal hole and sweep the map!

Lefty, my Risk pieces are still wood, and I remember well. That's why I used to keep a small pile of oblongs at the BACK of my empire, to terrify anyone who dared try a board sweep. It was often a chancey thing to hold on to the front lines while I built that pile up, but it was always worth it in the long run.

. ah Cavebear, you have the now coveted wooden block edition of Risk, rather than the more mass produce plastic tri-cross versions. I actually pocess neither, having resered my game inventory at the time for Avalon Hill & SPI games. There was always a wargamer around who had a copy for when we eschewed the nore serious fare in favor of Risk, Nuclear War, Junta, or Grand Imperialism, as well as some homemade, laugh games like Yellow Hair Gets Trimed and Mercenaries.

Lefty - the post count is like virtual **** size. Everyone says, "nah, it's not important" until you talk about cutting it off and getting rid of post count. Then look at the whiners come out of the woodwork.

If you look at the number of people vacationed for trying to jack their post counts, several of them multilpe time, it's truly pathetic.

So you're another old fart wargamer? Cool.

. I believe Avalon Hill is headquartered in Baltimore, there should be some sort of AH gamming club near you. Pearhaps you could even find the game designer to play aganst.

IIRC Avalon Hill went out of business

as for post count it gives the forum a bit more texture and lets you know whether or not some one posts actively.
