I browse with java and javascript off, so I don't think it's related to that. Does the browser download the code anyway?

        edit: Spell check. Dang allergies.

But it's never been like this before. There must be something new to this past week or so. Or esle it would have always been like this.

I'm with FMK on this one. This wasn't a problem a week ago. These daily slowdowns may be a combination of things, but they really didn't start until the new changes were implemented on the forums.

It will be interesting to see if things slow down again today

I don't have the problem, but I don't post much around that time, and even if I did, I might not notice (even at optimal time, apolyton loads pretty slowly ). What does kill me, is, however, the java applications in the ads (this was mentioned before). Java takes FOR EVER to initilize on my computer, so I always find myself waiting for it to finish. Another thing that takes time is when netscape displays 'reading file' across the bottom of the screen. While it is 'reading file' nothing else can happen on my computer, so multitasking becomes moot point.

Just saying what happens to me…

                  FMK,
we had similar problems in other times as well. Actually, it has been a sufficient time since something like that has appeared.

Btw, I should make a note that our server has an excellent uptime. our server administrator must have forgotten the last time the machine rebooted...

On last week's changes, I highly doubt they have a relation. The extra code(for the icq icon and the replies link) might have increased a bit the weight of the pages but nothing more...

Our tech. admin. informed me that the server had to be rebooted yesterday due to an unusually large, concurrent traffic load. Any server admin. would tell you he or she has likely experienced this now and again.

As Markos already said, we are not the only ones on this server. Fortunately we have a dedicated team behind us that is very approachable regarding anything, including server jams, and take care of it as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Your best bet is, when you're experiencing such a slowdown, to try again in 15-20mins and, if the problem persists, give it an another hour or so. If even then there is still a severe lag, inform Markos and myself via email (especially if it has been 24hrs.+ since the problem first arose).

                        Markos,

When the site is slow, I haven't been waiting for the ads to download. However, when this first started (and I was waiting for them), the biggest culprits seemed to be the flash ads. Also, the one that took longest of any was the one where britny spears head (I think) was being flushed down the toilet.

In general, when the slowness is not going on, the UGO ads are getting slower and slower to display. With my direct connection, your pages load instantaniously but the ad load from the UGO server always stops for a second. And the stopage is taking longer and longer as time goes by.

If UGO would get a faster server and/or more bandwidth, it would help out all around.
                        Don,

Apolyton's forums have some 5800 registered users. Even if just 1/4 of those users post and read regularly for, say, 20 or 30 minutes per day (lot of people a lot more than that), we have a massive amount of daily traffic for a server that is shared by a dozen other very popular sites, and Apolyton most likely isn't the worst bandwith hog these. So it's not surprising at all that the forums get pretty slow during "rush hours". There's no easy solution to this problem. A faster connection in your end makes no difference in this case, and it really won't help if you try to come here at some inhumane time, because it's always rush hour somewhere on the globe. We can only hope that Apolyton's host gets a faster network or divides traffic to more servers. Until that happens, you can expect on-line jam for lunch.

Ironically, the "Satan gives me a Chubby" ad took the longest to download tonight. - almost caused things to sieze up once.

I had this problem once before, several months ago. It was the same recurring slowness at certain times (although it was earlier at that time). Now as then, I did a Traceroute to find the origins of the slowdown.

Both times a "sprintlink" server owned by the American ISP Sprint (last time one in Seattle, this time one in the central US) was the single server on which ping times increased dramatically, more than doubled.

This is just speculation, but if the problem is on Sprint's severs and routers, it could be due to their new "wireles Internet" thing (a very striped-down version for cell phones) that has been around for less than a year. If it's anything like the so-called WAP services in Europe, it might put new traffic on IP based networks. But as I said, this is only speculation, so don't blame Sprint for your lag. Yet. =)
