  • Sound Problem With XP

I have a weird bug which I am not sure is related to XP or not, or if its my hardware that is causing problems.

Anyway, most of the time, when I launch Civ3, the sound will suddenly cut out, right in the middle of the game. It will happen completely at radom. Sometimes, I am able to play several minutes only before the sound goes out, and other times, I can play for hours and hours.

There is an odd coincidental occurrance that accompanies these sound outages. When I shut the game down and return to Windows, invariably, the system tray icon for the network is flashing that a local network connection is disconnected, and sure enough, my internet connection does not work. The only way for me to clear both errors is to reboot. Oh yes, when I say it shuts down the sound, I mean ALL sound, as in even in Windows.

I'm running a homebuilt machine with an ASUS P4B-266 MB with a P4 1.5 and 512 MB of RAM. The sound is via a C-Media audio device built into the mobo.

Other than this annoying problem, I don't really have any major complaints about running this game on XP. I have gotten an occasional total lock up, but they are fairly rare. I tried setting the game to run in "Compatibility Mode" but it refused to even start in that mode so I set it back to the original setting.

It is something specific to Civ 3 though, because I also play The Sims occasionally and I have never had a single problem with the sound in that game, even after hours and hours of play.
