lockups/freezes

Thanks to the posts here, I managed to fix the font problem on Civ III. The only problems I'm having now are random, temporary freezes--anywhere from 10 to about 45 seconds at a time. I get them at the beginning of a game, and throughout a game, and have not been able to detect any pattern. I've tried shutting down other programs and 3rd party startup items but that hasn't helped at all. Also updated my Nvidia driver, which did nothing. Reinstalled any number of times.

I'm using a HP Pavilion 600 mhz, Win98, 128 M Ram, Nvidia TNT2 Pro video card, 12-speed DVD-rom drive.

Any ideas?
