  • CIV3 the SETI Client and SLOOOW GAMES

For those who were not around during the CTP2 discussions on this, I thought Id raise it again for Civ3.

If you have the SETI client running on your PC constantly (ie, not on screensaver only mode) and your finding CIV3 running very slow ... try turning the SETI Client to Screen saver only mode ..

2 reasons for this, first of all, SETI client uses about 32Mb of your memory , which means if your running on a PC with less than 256Mb of ram, your going to hit Virtual memory very quickly, which will slow Civ 3 down a great deal.

secondly, Seti is implemented using an idle thread priority, idea being that it only runs if no other process of higher priority is active ... however, many other programs use idle priority threads in the same way, and this causes a bit of muddle between the two processes (basically, they get split processor rights) which slows down both threads. This time round, Ive not been able to test this, because my PC is a 2Ghz P4 with 256Mb .. so Ive not had any issue's with Civ3 and Seti .. but .. if your finding the game slow, try kicking it off, and see if that helps (same goes for any additional processes you may have running, taking up memory or process time)..

On a slightly divergant note, its always good to remind people that there is a Apolyton Seti group .. which im sure somebody can provide a link to, for those who would like to join (im sure if you do a search on Seti .. in the CTP2 threads you will find that link).
