You are wrong. China did not support me for most of the early game at all. In fact he clearly supported my Indian and Zulu enemies at a time in which any mistake in the long and terrible war that was raging would have caused me to be eliminated. Only after I finally crushed the remnants of the Indian army was I able to send my veteran armies to raid China, with the intent to destroy it for helping my enemies. Qin literally begged for his life in exchange for his "loyal" support. I really wanted to destroy him anyway but my economy was almost bankrupt by then and I figured I could use a vassal, so I decided to be merciful. The only reason why he didn't capitulate is because I hadn't discovered Feudalism yet, but he was my vassal de facto and only remained loyal because he didn't trust you or the Zulu to help him, as he knew my armies would quickly destroy China before any foreign help could arrive.
Helping someone win in exchange for your life I think is legitimate. Specially when we are talking about a player who has always declared war or embargos on me on most games we have played just for the lols
I do agree, however, that past is past and we are talking about the future here
