The subject is a big vague, so I'll try and explain:
In the intro video to SMAC, they paint the picture that pretty much, Earth was the subject of constant warfare near the end. And, if memory serves, most of SMAC's endings had your faction return to Earth to rebuild it.
At the time, I just took it for granted, because SMAC was the first Civ game I played. Plus, it made great thematic sense to take Earth out of the picture completely.
Now that I've played more Civ, and found I much I dislike warware in the games (not knocking the game itself, I just don't like doing it), I realize that if my games were the ones Sid would have based SMAC off off, the plot would be far less... depressing than the existing one.
In ESMAC (EternalSpark's Alpha Centauri), the Unity would have lifted off from a country that everyone else generally liked, and most of the wars were fought far away from EternalSpark lands. Citizens of EternalSparkia would generally find them amusing, because they used weapons that even the common street urchin wouldn't want to use. Earth wouldn't do dark and dead, because anyone who fought against EternalSparkia would be crushed by superior weaponry.
So what about you? Take a general bead of how your games play out, add a space ship taking off at the end, and ask yourself: Would SMAC's intro video change?
