In Civ, there are a number of techs/buildings/wonders that can turn your middle of the road civilization in to the front-runner. The primary advantage that humans have over the AI is that the AI often does not know what these techs are.
The quicker we find out these break points, the quicker we can find new strategies, and begin to really understand what this game is about.
Let me start with the most obvious, and most important (IMHO) techs in the game:
Militarywise (important techs)
1st grouping:
Animal Husbandry (Chariot, goes to H-back riding)
Bronze Working (Axeman)
Chariot and Axeman rushes are deadly, and getting up a rush within the first 50 turns can win you the game. Plus, you get to bum rush those barbarians that might be setting up near you early. Horseback Riding and Iron Working are natural extensions of these first two key techs which strategies are based around.
