I imagine this issue has been mentioned elsewhere but I don't have time to slog through pages of posts.
Often, I have a system lock-up when re-loading a saved game. I have to go to task manager to turn off Civ IV. My workaround is to start a new game then CTRL-L to load the save. I'm running:
2.3 GHz
GeForce 5600 video
1 Gig RAM
