OK, does anyone know if Apple releases a seperate English and Japanese version of its OS like Windows, or do they just release one version of OS X worldwide? The latter seems likely considering the excellent Japanese support built right into OS X, but I want to make sure. If they only release one OS X version worldwide, I should be able to easily find it in Osaka. That would be sugoi...

one nice thing about being a student its just 69 USD. looking forward to seeing what all is new, i've had the chance to play with expose on a friends computer(got an early copy somehow, i didn't ask) and its looking to be very nice. just waiting till friday, then i can blow this buggy 10.2.8 update off.

panag, Students do get cut a serious break... I'd have to look and see if I got that much of one, but I'd wager it to be so.

As a student I'll be getting Panther for 130 C$ (usually C$200).

The sad news is that I will have to wait a week for my grant cheque to clear before I can afford to pay for it. And then I'll no doubt have to wait while the incompetent numbskulls at the computer store mess up the order.

Oh well, post some screenshots.

Thanks to your inspiration. I'd never really tried out the Unicode feature of Safari for anything other than reading Greek on line.

I didn't install the font you linked to, so it must've already been on my computer. Probably came with OS X, but maybe Office installed it or something.

So what features are all of you looking forward to about Panther? Having seen expose in action, i think that it is the feature i'll be using the most.

Panag, I don't have a "source" but i have a friend who does, that's how he got his copy for free. My discount was just part of the apple store for education, although with tax it ended up costing me in the neighborhood of 73 USD. So all in all one of the few advantages of being a student.

That's ****ing incredible.

Mac OS X has built in support for polytonic Greek!!! That means that someone somewhere at Apple remembered us Classicists and our strange needs.

It's ****ing perfect too - not one missed accent AFAICS - even the combos.

And to think I've been downloading specialist Greek fonts for nothing (well to use in shitty old MS Word).

Excellent... **** that **** Bill Gates and his **** software!!

Do you have your browser set to view Unicode? Most people don't, but I had mine set to it already in order to display the Japanese text in my sig. Ag's sig was readable in my browser right away, no font installation necessary.

This is great. It means that there is now a standard for Greek on computers that actually works. I typed that in using another font and the old Greekkeys keyboard utility.

Has anyone tried setting IE to unicode and viewing?

I didn't install that font and I see what Drake sees, in a different font, but they're the same characters.

Do you understand how Unicode works, Agathon?

I have a hard time understanding why this is "****ing incredible" when it has been around since 1999 on the Windows side.

It's not the unicode support that I'm happy about, but the Greek support.

And you can say what you like, Greek support on all platforms has not been great. I should know, I've had to deal with it for years. Unicode support in Word X is ****, which is why I'm upgrading to Nisus Writer X when it comes out.

I think I'm going to grab a utility to write my own keyboard layout just for Greek.

Unicode includes all of the Greek characters...

I dunno, I have no problems at all writing in Unicode in Word 2003 (lots of weird-ish symbols for mathy things).
