    Is 1024x768 essential??

Is there no way that a 600x800 screen can play Civ3? I have ready access to 3 computers, and 600x800 is the best i have! Whatever happened to Sid's motto of limited requirements for his games?? I'm devastated!

Most people have 1024x768 or better. If you don't have a monitor that can support that, it's about time you get one.

The gaming industry needs to move on. Why should it wait on the handful of people who have outdated monitors?

Although I run at 1024x768, I must admit that Firaxis is rushing too strictly the high res playability next to the rest of the industry. Perhaps 1-2 years ahead, but remember we're almost three years after SMAC release, also built on 1024x768 BUT playable at 800x600. Part of the cuts....

    Akron,

thats not correct, most people DO NOT have a computer/monitor with a 1024x768 or better. my monitor runs at 800x600, but it can be playable at that resolution. however, most people do not. if you read alot of the posts, most people here don't have access to a computer with that type of resolution.

and also, Master Marcus, civ3 really isn't that ahead of the gaming community. the requirements are at a quite reasonable level. 300 mhz (or is it 400?) is not high, nor is 32 MB RAM, and the 400 mb req space is nothin. Diablo II required a minimum of 600, but the standard req. was 900 - 1500 MB. the only thing I have to complain about is the resolution, compared to the other requirements, it is a bit too high I think for those that can't run at that level.

Though I do have a little sympathy for those who don't have 1024rez supported monitors, I must say that if you are unable to play at that mainstream rez, it's time for an upgrade.

Do you mean that Civ3 can play at 600x800, or do you mean that your monitor can play at 1024x768? Anyway, i realised that my monitor indicated that it can play at 1024x768, but only with 256 colours, but would that display Civ3 at all?

The point is, is that less and less games are coming out on PC, so the cost of a major computer upgrade cannot be justified by a solitary game. That means that Civ3 could cost $1000 if Civ3 was the only reason for your computer upgrade. Simply put, i could spend $500 on a PS2, which will give me a DVD player, a greater range of games, and the ability to hire games to try-before-you-buy. Only Civ3 can make this into any sort of debate

Maybe your right about the resolution, but I believe that all new monitors for the past few years, aside from the dirt cheap ones, have supported 1024x768. Hell, it's now the standard for laptops (unless you're going to the REALLY cheap end, or one of those super light/ small things). But since I'm curious, I'll start a poll on this.

no no guys, i got a dirt cheap monitor a year and a half ago and it displyas up to 1600*1200, ok? if u dont have 1024, then u need an upgrade. the results of the poll will be interesting.. The only reason that "most" of the posts u have seen have only 800*600 is because the only people that post are the ones that have something to complain about. anyway, even in this thread, more people do have it.

This is making me wonder if a lot of people think that just because they run their screen rez at 600x../800x.., that they won't be able to run CivIII, even though their monitor and system CAN support the higher resolution!

Are you guys sure that your monitors can't support that rez? My old 133 from '95 had a peice of crap monitor and it could still run 1280 x 1024. Maybe you can run that rez but you don't know maybe?

Hey guys keep in mind that a video card is just as responsible for your maximum resolution... My video card spits out resolutions that may 2 yr old 17" monitor can't handle... But, fortunately, , 1024x768 is my standard res.

Most people should be able to change the settings, but they just don't realize it. It's a Windows 98 feature (maybe Win 95 too.) Here's how to change your settings to 1024 x 768:

    Click Start
    Click Settings
    Click Control Panel
    Double-click Display icon
    Click Settings tab
Move the "Screen Area" tab a notch or two to the right until it says "1024 x 768"
    Click Apply.
Answer yes to any questions it asks.

    That's it.

I did it to mine, and everything looks a little tiny, so I'll probably only do it for Civ. Its very easy to switch back and forth.

ummm....maybe you should re-think that? it is *well-known* that most people DO have a computer/monitor *capable* of 1024x768 BUT the majority *uses* 800x600 for daily use.

if you disagree, check ANY poll on the internet (one that shows capabilities, not usage) and you will see. there is even a thread in the civ3-gen forum of the Apolyton stats that Markos posted some months ago.

    EDIT: check this thread out.

What people don't realize is a Direct X game will change your screen resolution to 1024 X 768 when it boots up the game. If your video set-up (graphic card/monitor) can't handle it, your SOL.
