  • Everything you want to know about CivII combat!

This is a blatant plug for my thread about CivII combat, in the CivII Strategy forum. There you will find everything you want to know about CivII combat. I hope it will prove helpful in the design of scenarios and new units, for any updates of scenarios that may be made, and general improvement of play.

    Info: Combat (GL)

I am posting this because a new thread in the Civ3 forums made clear that many apolytoners have never read it. Much misinformation about how combat works still makes the rounds on these forums. I originally posted this material about six months ago. Read and enjoy!

    Sodaq,

Your collection of combat observations is just too good to waste sitting on a thread somewhere. It will eventually be lost when the thread is archived.

Why don't you piece everything together into a text file and get it posted at civfanatics.com ( I can tell you who to contact if you need) where it will be available for all eternity to anyone who needs the info.

I agree that a thread is not the best format for having this info (which BTW, I think is great ) easily available and readable. Why don't put it into a word file, or a txt file?

        Thread --> document

Thanks, it's good to hear you like the thread. Making a document of the thread sounds like an excellent idea. Some points are still unresolved, so I'd have to submit an occasional update. Who at Civfanatics should I contact to post it there? I'd put it here, too, of course.

SlowThinker has an equivalent thread about Diplomats and Spies in the Strategy forum. His should also be made a document, IMHO. I can contact him about that.

          just go to

there will be daily news. Under the title of each news item is a 'posted by XXX'. A lot of these will be by thunderfall and you need only click the name to send him an email.

You can't post it at S-L because the site can't be updated.

The file below contains the text of the main part of that thread. It needs some editing and formatting. It's actually an HTML file but I can't attach those.

Here is the compilation of CivII combat knowledge in convenient document form. The first zip is for MS Word. My version is a few years old, but all newer versions are backward compatible.

                    Combat Calculator

Shameless plug #2. Want an instant prediction of combat results? Try the attached MS Excel file.

The observations and equations listed in the GL combat thread are the algorithms behind this VBA spreadsheet that Slowthinker, Henrik, and I have been working on. It can be summed up as follows:

                    1) The program calculates the probability of the attacker's success

                    2) It also calculates the average injury expected per single eliminated opponent.

                    3) There a number checkboxes to activate the myriad of modifiers discussed in the thread.

                    4) Unit values can be entered manually or read from the Rules.txt of your choice.

Please try it out and send comments. Although this has been revised thoroughly since a earlier posting in August, suggestions for improvement are welcome. I'd like this to be a user-friendly summation of information in the thread.
