It's difficult for me to think of a decent replacement for Jon Stewart. Larry Wilmore is funny. Though, I think the format of his show could use some tweaking.

Any of the existing Daily Show correspondents would do a fine job. I think those shows are all heavily driven by the talent of the writing staff. Colbert is a superb talent. I think Stewart is too, but more so because he is so experienced at the style of delivery.

John Oliver is good, but his bits on the HBO show can drag on. It's like he takes what would have been 15-30 second jokes on the Daily Show and tries to stretch them out. The bits that he does have diminishing returns of funny the longer they go.
To us, it is the BEAST.

That's the best part and why Oliver has eclipsed the Daily Show. He actually tries to go in depth on some of these issues and teach his audience about them in a long form way and not in a "LOL, that's funny, let's move on now" way. And he tries to get his audience to act - either by sending emails to the FCC or calling people or whatever.

You're talking apples to my oranges.

You can have the activism without the long bits. I'm purely talking about comedic bit length. That's it.

The activism is not part of a comedic bit.

It's connected to the comedic bit. Oliver does something that Stewart doesn't. He connects his comedy to actual in depth issues and gets people to react after they've been informed more, which is punctuated by lots of comedy, which gets people to actually listen to being informed in the first place.

Also Oliver is like the funniest standup I've ever seen, so I'm partial to the dude.

No. They are completely separate... or can be completely separated.

There's no reason for bits to go on longer than they have to.

(just for the record, I would say this only applies to some or many of his bits...)

Are we supposed to be laughing at people who take orders from the British?

Do I really need to post clips of long bits that have absolutely zero activism behind them?

A lot of them tend to build up to activism. And a lot of them are just about how ****ty something really is - which is intended to get the audience mad at it and try to do something to change it - it may not include an email or phone number, but almost always includes a plea to change things.

For example, there has been a change in Civil Asset Forfeiture by the Obama Administration - I don't think its coincidence that John Oliver confronted that issue on his show a few months back and went into detail with how horrific it is.

Again. You're talking apples an oranges. The lengthy discussion on Civil Asset Forfeiture was not part of a 2-3 minute bit.

Then you are referring to something that really isn't Oliver's bread and butter. The 2-3 minute bit is something in there to fill time, basically. The show is really about the long form comedy journalism.

Okay, after watching the John Oliver bit on Philip Morris International, I'm totally onboard (not that this will result on any activism from me; I'm just giving a big fat to what he's doing).
