I bet the Turks are just thrilled to have borders with TWO collapsing states now. And the second one will only get better by becoming either a fundamentalist theocracy or Kurdistan. I wonder which one they would hate more?

that's probably true, although the one can create space for the other, as in syria.

also turkey has been supplying the syrian rebels with money and matériel, much of which has found its way into the hands of islamist groups, as well as political support for the opposition...

Should we call in ODIN to deal with this ISIS operation?

ISIS is the same group that ruled Fallujah during the US occupation...

it's interesting to think about why a relatively small group of militants has been able to overcome the far more numerous, american trained and equipped iraqi army. it seems hard to believe that the iraqi army forces are so bad that ISIS could best them militarily (although see the bad, and incredibly expensive, joke that is the afghan national army), and having read a little more about falluja and considering what happened in mosul, it seems that there wasn't a lot of fighting, but rather that the iraqi army just melted away. this suggests that it's primarily a political problem and maliki has lost the confidence of a large section of the population, and crucially the police and army, to the point that they are at least not prepared to resist extremists taking over.

i've also read a couple of pieces by american 'strategic analysts', that essentially say that what iraq needs is a strong leader who can unite the country: come back saddam, all is forgiven!

hmmm... well, if you've every seen what they (militants, either side) do to each other when captured... I guess I would drop weapons and run to - when everyone else is also. savages.

as someone from the US... I couldn't care less about some dirt city over there. US probably never should have been there. besides, if there was some button over there labeled - erase US - every one of those countries would go to war with each other just to get the chance to press that button. just so they could say they did it!

I say screw them - let them kill each other trying to figure out how not to be savages. would save US lots of $$.

                              good to be back
