  • What part of that quote makes you think that she is not blaming men for killing their mothers? What part makes you think she is not saying to kill your father? Can men say "kill your mother?" If they are the oppressors why don't the call for the death of their mothers?

Even if I accepted your premise, you do know that contraceptives are used for a variety of different reasons, right?

The fact that people rarely kill their mothers on purpose? What purpose could telling people not to kill their mothers serve if it were meant literally? Use some common sense, please.

Treatment for endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome aren't the most common use of contraception and you know it, Guy. You can't be stupid enough to pretend otherwise. But under my premise, those treatments would be covered.

No, contraceptives are used for one reason. Certain drugs that are used as contraceptives can also be used for other things. If those other things have compelling reasons to be covered so be it, it's irrelevant to their possible use as contraceptives.

There are plenty of drugs out there that have multiple uses but only covered for a some of them.

                    • from an insurance company point of view it's probably cheaper to provide it for free if it results in having to pay for treating fewer pregnancies.

But personally I dislike paying for sikle cell treatment coverage since it's unlikely I'll every get it.

I'm against requiring prescriptions for most drugs. Unless there's a real need to control use (like with antibiotic misuse leading to drug resistant strains), we should focus of educating the users about risks and letting them make their own decisions.

EDIT: Of course, I think that LSD should be at least as available as aspirin (which kills more people?), so I can accept that I'm in the minority on this.

If insurance company actuaries calculate that providing contraceptives free of charge is a good idea, that's their business, and I'd have no problem whatsoever.

A car insurance company might figure that they'd reduce costs by paying for or subsidizing maintenance (like brake pad replacement). If they do so, that's cool with me too.

The problem comes from requiring insurance to cover routine expenses. It goes against the basic idea of insurance (small regular payments to offset the risk of occasional catastrophic expenses), and only serves to distort the market.
