Today I learned the original, actual purpose of the Dieppe Raid was to "pinch" the new four-rotor Enigma machines that British intelligence knew was at a German HQ there. This was only recently unveiled (since 2010) as documents became declassified. All of the men (10,500 total; 3,367 casualties) were involved to indirectly support a secret commando unit that was to sneak in, "loot" the intel, and steam back to the nearest British port during the battle.
The most remarkable bit of all was the brainchild behind this operation (or at least the creator of the commando unit and the man who was waiting off-shore to take the Engima machines in his hands and then steam home).
His name was Ian Flemming.
That name may ring a bell. That's because he's the author who later brought us Bond. James Bond.
