What is it famous for, other than being the suicide capital of the world?

It's been 75 years since President FDR ordered the construction of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge as part of an infrastructure project designed to improve America and fight the great depression. To celebrate the bridge's 75th birthday they're giving the entire bridge a complete overhaul, repainting everything, and they've just opened a brand new visitors center which supposedly has one of the best views in America.
Here's a link to a video about the 75th anniversary events: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47585391.../#.T8LkOcX0_5w
Also, since tomorrow is Memorial Day, I thought I'd post this picture taken yesterday of BB-61, the Battleship USS Iowa, traveling out under the Golden Gate Bridge on it's way to L.A. where they intend to make the WW2 era battleship into a floating museum.

What is it famous for, other than being the suicide capital of the world?

Seattle has far more suicides than San FRancisco. It's famous for being in hundreds of movies over the years including many iconic ones plus for being a huge tourist attraction; not to mention it's a beautiful structure in its own right.
Here's the USS Iowa from another angle.

Anyway, Gribbler, there are only a handful of truly iconic structures in the world and few of them are in America. This is one of them.

Yeah, FDR. The President had the Golden Gate Bridge funded as part of his New Deal infrastructure spending program. Construction started in 1934 and was completed in 1937.

Bank of AmericaThe Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District, authorized by an act of the California Legislature, was incorporated in 1928 as the official entity to design, construct, and finance the Golden Gate Bridge.[11] However, after the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the District was unable to raise the construction funds, so it lobbied for a $30 million bond measure. The bonds were approved in November 1930,[14] by votes in the counties affected by the bridge.[24] The construction budget at the time of approval was $27 million. However, the District was unable to sell the bonds until 1932, when Amadeo Giannini, the founder of San Francisco–based Bank of America, agreed on behalf of his bank to buy the entire issue in order to help the local economy.[7]

I'm positive the WPA was involved some how even if it was just co-signing loans though I do know the tunnel attached to the bridge says it was built by the WPA.

The Golden Gate, Rushmore Mountain, the Statue of Liberty, Empire State (WTC when it existed) White House, Pentagon, the Hollywood Sign, most are in the last CIV Games

I don't remember seeing the Golden Gate bridge, Empire State Building or the White House in any civ games.

It was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was built.

well, many, not most. but those are the famous USA iconic structures I can think of

Didn't they have Hoover Dam in Civ2 & 3 but in Civ4 they changed it to the Three Gorges Dam? I can't think of any bridges as wonders in any civ game.

Hey, this is OT! No whining about how lousy everything since Civ2 has been...
Yeah, well, the impact of bridges tends to be highly localized.

Actually, that's a fun game. I spotted another one!
Even if, in Oerdin's strange counter-factual reality, FDR ordered the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, he sure didn't do it 75 years ago. 75 years ago was when the bridge was finished, not when it was begun or ordered.

Several posts later.
However if you insist that your statement of "It's been 75 years since President FDR ordered the construction of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge as part of an infrastructure project designed to improve America and fight the great depression." was made while fully knowing the construction dates then it is your math skills I am more concerned about.

OK, let's search for the source of this miscommunication. When I said, in the OP, that the bridge was now 75 years old... How did you not understand that they started counting from the completion date? A baby's birthday is the day it is born not the day mommy and daddy had a tumble in the back of the Chevy.

2012 - 75 = 1937It's been 75 years since President FDR ordered the construction of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge
Was the construction of the bridge ordered in 1937? No......

OK, that was a typo then. I did say construction started in 1934 and was completed in 1937 though so this is just nitpicking.

Actually the thing I always remember is that someone mentioned that painting the bridge is non stop. When they finish it's time to start again.

Same as the Forth Bridge in Scotland
Far more impressive IMO! I actually thought the Golden Gate bridge was pretty boring, to be honest...
Also USS Missouri > USS Iowa IMO.
