"Birth Rape": turns out it's not actually rape
Just stumbled across it on Facebook. Somebody on my friends list read some article, using one of those stupid social readers, with the headline "Birth Rape: Why is it happening in our hospitals?" Of course that got a giant WTF, so I searched for the term wondering whether doctors/nurses/staff somewhere were supposedly sexually assaulting infants and/or exhausted, vulnerable new mothers. Instead, I got this:

Summary: If your doctors are too pushy and/or impersonal during delivery, some fringe of the feminist movement thinks you are the victim of something remotely equivalent to rape. I just thought you'd all like to know that.

It is indeed a very important societal project to randomly (I mean, utterly randomly) pick out specific constructions meant to defend woman's dignity (come on now, you know what REALLY threatens this one, it's not the wrongdoers, it's the critics), ridicule them and everyone steps out a bit wiser. Al's reaction highlights how well this project is undergoing. Congrats, Elok. The question is, WHOSE project is it really?

Apolyton is a lot more conservative than it used to be, mostly because there are no commies posting. When people like Asher and Imran represent 'the Left', the center of the discussion is a bit on the right side.

Rape was a stupid word to use here. That said, we're talking about a group of strangers standing around staring at and touching a womens most personal areas. Its not hard to see how deeply unsettling that could be if the doctor or nurses made you feel like dirt during the process.
How many doctors or nurses actually want to make a mother giving birth feel like dirt?
You'd hope none, but this would suggest that sometimes thats exactly whats happening. Presumably its going to be mostly a side effect of overworked, tired doctors, but its statistically certain that there are going to be some doctors who are just *******s, like there are *******s in every profession.
There's certainly room for improvement when it comes to birthing in hospitals. The process is designed for doctors' convenience, not that of the woman giving birth; for example, lying on her back is a lousy position to give birth from, since it means she's got to push the baby *up* out of her birth canal, against gravity. But the position gives doctors easy access, so that's what they do. And so on.

I'd contend that this suggests some women perceive it to be happening, regardless of whether or not it is. We should remember that women giving birth are not exactly in the right frame of mind most of the time, what with the stress and the fatigue and the hormones and such. So it's certainly possible that women could think the doctors are being *******s in some way when they're not. And it's possible that women could not think doctors are being *******s when they are. And so on.
This is true....its statistically certain that there are going to be some doctors who are just *******s, like there are *******s in every profession.
Perfectly true, but surely the sensitivity of the procedure should suggest that doctors make their demeanour especially gentle?
Lets put this another way for people who don't have the imagination to understand...this is a combination of 2 things that surely anyone can relate to and its not a 'liberal minded' problem
-say you have surgery for something e.g heart surgery..maybe there are two options...you way up the recovery rates and risks and choose what best and someone gasses you and does the opposite...you would be pretty pissed no?
- being penetrated is always more distressing than say having your pulse taken, in certain contexts it is neccesary and not sexual e.g airport searches. However if there was no legal reason, or if you were forced and strapped down...it may feel much more distressing than if it is done in a proffesional, consentual manner, you would have cause to complain no?
- add into to someone 'proffessional' intervening with your child...the type of birth not only changes how the female heals/recover..there are certain birthing processes that the human system needs to go through...if someone enforced that decision onto what to do with your child by misleading, lying and then knocking you out again...
YOU WOULD BE FORCED TO FIND A NAME AS SHOCKING AS THE EXPERIENCE...go ask you Mum how she would have felt if this happened to her...then post your 'civilised' opinion.....
I strongly approve of the label "birth rape" for those cases where the doctor jams his erect penis in "to try and lever the baby out." Most other cases, not so much. Those would be cases of "professional misconduct" or "malpractice."

Being lazy, I'll just assume it involves the logistically problematic act of whipping it out and in while someone has his/her mouth open for a yawn. That's what it sounds like, anyway.
