For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

The gas tax should keep pace with inflation (or be higher).
One of the worst (environmental) subsidies in the US is our subsidies of car transportation via low gas taxes.

As always, you demonstrate your knack for saying something true while completely lacking the insight that it doesn't matter in the least.

Unless the gas tax was insufficient in 1993 or drivers have somehow become more harmful in the last 20 years I don't see why it should be raised.

I would probably say our other major anti-environmental subsidies are agricultural. These have probably a stronger environmental impact than the gas subsidies.

I'm totally for raising the gas tax though right now might not be politically possible (election year). Right now the gas tax only covers about 20% of the total cost to just maintain roads & highways and none of the cost to build new ones. We'll need a massive increase in the gas tax if we want roads to be self funding.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.
