It was supposed to be one of those feel-good segments on a local television newscast: A rescued dog. A grateful owner. The hero firefighter who pulled the dog from the ice. But that's not how it turned out.

The dog, an Argentine mastiff named Gladiator Maximus, attacked Kyle Dyer, anchorwoman at NBC's KUSA Denver affiliate, during a live, in-studio segment on Wednesday that was meant to celebrate the dog's rescue from an icy lake the day before.

Dyer was shown petting the mastiff during the segment, then kneeling on the floor to get closer, when the 85-pound pooch bit her in the face. Paramedics and animal control were called to the studio. Dyer was rushed to a Denver hospital where she had reconstructive surgery overnight. The 3-year-old dog was taken to a Denver animal shelter where it is being "quarantined."

Max and his owner spent about 45 minutes in the newsroom before they went on the air, and many members of the staff greeted them and petted Max. He seemed perfectly normal. During the interview Kyle petted him, and talked to the two guest. At the very end of the segment, Max snapped at Kyle for whatever reason

Whatever reason? Whatever reason?

Maybe because it's a freaking unpredictable animal!

Just look at the comments. The usual trash I expect will be posted here:

this was completely her fault , u can't go up close to an animal that doesn't know you and put ur face near his face of course he will fell threatened it does not help the fact he is surrounded by noises he is not used to bad move on her part

He was just scared and whatever that "buzz" was in the background seemed to be what made him react. I hope she doesn't need any surgery and realizes he didn't mean it.

She was obviously going for his jugular. Look... she had gotten a hold with her hand, bringing her vicious jaws down towards the exposed neck. Clearly this was self-defense.

I blame this incident on absence of Claws. If people were allowed to carry concealed Claws, such tragedies could be avoided.

My guess is all the cameras, lights, strange sounds, and unfamiliar people scared the dog.

How many human-on-human attacks are there for every instance of a dog biting someone? Probably a lot. I'd feel safer with a strange dog than a strange human.

That is actually 100% accurate; especially for a dog that has just had such a massive trauma.

No one involved in this was thinking very clearly.

That is a Dogo Argentino (a mastiff), a very big and dangerous dog, and a breed I would forbid, it kills people every year, and if I recall correctly it was bred especially for dog fighting, it is very aggressive with those who are not their owners, I see one on the street and I already begin to feel nervous.

I like dogs who are about as big as a fox, or slightly bigger, I don't trust completely big dogs.

And, as Guy said, going up to a strange dog in an unfamiliar environment, putting your face right next to its face, and looking it straight in the eye is the canine equivalent of walking up to a stranger and saying "I had sex with your mother, but I didn't enjoy it."

I grew up with a succession of Danes (they only live about 10 years and we never got them as puppies); only one of our seven was aggressive, and he had a hormone problem. My mother still tells me about the time she heard a howl coming from the living room. She rushed in and found me, maybe one year old, pulling myself up by the jowls of our black Dane Natasha. It hurt like all get out, of course, but she just howled. She wouldn't think of biting me.

Yes, some big dog breeds are extremly friendly, golden retrievers are pretty big and I can't imagine one of them attacking anything.

Does it need to be a purebred dog? There are some perfectly good dogs in animal shelters that might get put down if you don't adopt them.
