Civilization 5: Korea, and Wonders of the Ancient World

2K Greg just announced two new DLCs:

Two new DLCs available this Thursday: Korea, and Wonders of the Ancient World
Good morning forumers! Next week, you’ll be able to get your hands on two new add-on packs for Civilization V.

The first is Civilization and Scenario Pack: Korea, which allows you to play as Sejong, King of the Choson Dynasty as the leader of the Korean civilization. The scenario begins with Toyotomi Hideyoshi having just unified Japan, and is looking towards Korea to expand his empire. In the scenario you can play as Korea, China, Manchuria, or Japan.

The second is something a bit different than we’ve done in the past: Wonders of the Ancient World Scenario Pack. This add-on adds three new early-game wonders to the game: The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Statue of Zeus, and the Temple of Artemis. The scenario is a race between the civilizations to be the greatest builder of the Wonders of the Ancient World.

Both of these packs will release Thursday, August 11. Each of the add-ons will cost $4.99, or you can buy them both together for $7.49.

I'm sure this news is going to make some of you ask about a potential patch. There is a patch coming. It is not necessarily releasing before this DLC, but I am getting the current patch notes together for you and I'll post a separate thread as soon as I have the info. Please don't use this thread to ask about the patch.

The pricing for Civ V DLC is just ridiculous. I wish they would just package all of this stuff (including previous DLC) into an expansion and sell it for $20.

The sad part is the Wonder of the Ancient World Scenario Pack actually sounds kind of interesting, but not at $5.

I bought them. I really like wonders and the H'wacha in the other versions. I'll play as Korea in my next game and rate the traits.

So very in the spirit of good fan sites of you.

Btw, the patch is released and the patch notes has been available for a day or so now. Mostly me who post about such things, it feel. And still no thread about it. Do I need to do everything around here? Or perhaps I shouldn't bother, as this is not a site which cares for civ related news anymore?

Have to agree with Nikolai... Wonderful attitude toward Civ 5 (Zoet's, that is). Why bother having a Civ 5 "fan" site? Then again, Apolyton seems more and more irrelevant these days, so I guess no one will notice anyway.

Started my first game with the new DLCs and my first thought was wow, the guy in charge of deciding traits must be really pro Korean as his trait is way too powerful. Also, the H'wacha's are 9 point ranged value better than the Trebuchnet. That is over 50%. The Turtle boats are OK, but I don't do much in the water.

I really like the new wonders, just what you need in the early game.

I have found a major bug with the new patch and will make a thread for it.

Also, I have to agree with Nikolai.

We have to pay additional money for a civ and two wonders that were in Civ4 but weren't included in Civ5?

I don't understand the hate of the DLCs. The game is now a decent game and the DLC just keep it fresh will they work on improving the bugs that remain. The cost is too small to be concerned and I at least get $7.00 worth of pleasure from it. Heck, I generally spend more for one drink and that's gone much quicker than I get bored with a new civ and wonders.

Just made my first Hwach'a, and I can hardly wait to use it.

I hope the AI for Korea is better in Civ5 than in Civ 4. In Civ 4, Korea never built more than one city on my computer...

Which is sad because I quite like Korea.

I got both DLCs on a Steam sale ($5 for one, $7.50 for both), and I like the results so far. The Aztecs held me to a draw the first couple times they attacked but the I got a couple Hwach'a and shredded them.

Side note: The Aztecs seem to be taking the role of the Zulu in Civ V, attacking early and often. I know Civ V forces them to wait until the ink is dry on the treaty, but Aztecs seem to develop quick drying ink. Although in Civ II the Zulu cheated and used pencil...

The leaders in Civ2 had some kind of personalty, probably not so sophisticated but they had.

Indeed. The Greeks actually were able to hold the lind against me in Civ II wars. No one else could.

You don't understand why people dislike paying for content that should be with the initial release?

    Let me break it down.

I like money. I like video games.

Paying more for less means I have less of two things I like.

Which brings me to the interesting question:
Will DLCs be the only things we`ll see from Civ V,
or are there any indications that they also work on "real" expansions
(you know, like "Generals" or "Beyond the Sword" for Civ IV ... where totally new game mechanics have been introduced that changed the game considerably)

I like the DLC so far, although I admit I have yet to pay full price for any of it, always waiting and then catching it on sale from Steam.

I do hope they are working on some sort of expansion. BTS is what really made Civ IV, and I believe Civ V has the potential to reach that level. And remember, it took Civ IV that long to reach that level.

If the game had worked properly, it would have been playable with the civs that came with it. I see no problem paying for extra civs. We had no problem paying for the expansion packs which generally changed the play enough to annoy me. Fix this game and leave the rules the same and I'll happily pay a few bucks a time for more civs.

SAVA, you can't tell me you have never wasted $7.00 for less. My point was that it isn't enough money for the hate generated by them.

I am incredibly stingy when it comes to DLCs. I would prefer to have one big expansion pack than doling out a little money here, and a little money there. It can really add up, but fools you into thinking that it doesn't.

Of course, now that I've bought some DLCs, I'm going to be very leery about buying an expansion pack if one ever comes out. I would be very annoyed if it came with the things I already bought, and extremely angry if I had to buy the same things for the new expansion.

Add to that the fact that Steam doesn't work at all with my school's network (I live on campus), and my buying of DLCs is a rare thing.

I agree, they better be very careful if they even do an expansion pack. I'd prefer them not to do an expansion pack and stick to DLC.

Wait, so instead of doing expansion packs, they're just selling scenarios piecemeal now? How deplorably crass...do you pay licensing fees to distribute fan scenarios too?
