It does not matter what the students think of you, it just matters what the professor says.
I had people saying I was the most horrid TA ever for years, and never had a mention. Then one semester I was doing a decent job, but the professor came and discovered that I had been letting out the discussion section early (if they had no questions, I told them they could go).
I then got a reprimand.
I had friends who had glowing reports from all their students all the time, the friend who got the TA reward didn't have these, but the Prof. liked him.

Actually, this isn't true. Here a large part of the determination is based off of student evaluations.
In fact, unless a prof goes out of the way, this is the SOLE determinant of who wins it.
Which is why I had a very irresponsible subordinate TA win the award a couple of years ago (he disappeared instead of showing up to grade part of the final exam, as was his responsibility). I was quite angry with that, actually.
Payback.

Getting a similar award from my dept this sememster. More due to logistics necessary to keep the class running (largest class in the dept. by a factor of two) than any special attention I paid to the students.
Will be helpful 'cuz I'll be unemployed for a couple months. Dunno how large it'll be, but I'm hoping that it can cover rent (at $215/mo right now).
