The harsh realities of our world won't go away by TV ignoring them.

I'm watching a program called called "Stalking Jihad" on the history channel. They're talking about Abu Sayyaf and they just showed video of AS members hacking away, albeit unsuccessfully, with bolo knives at peoples' necks. I'm all for history being presented honestly, but the history channel is tv, and they won't even call the Rape of Nanking the Rape of Nanking.

Neither will vomitting. But I really don't want to watch it.![]()
While I agree with Winston, I also agree with Space on this one. Those kind of images can be a bit traumatizing, and audience is not necessarily ready to take it, so at least a fair warning should be presented.

Calling the program "Stalking Jihad" might be considered a hint for some.
All right, I agree that viewers should be cautioned in advance of something like this. Wasn't there a warning given?

The problem I really have with it is that I grew up watching the history channel. Somewhere there is a kid sitting alone watching this show.
The first time I saw a person being beheaded (on a video online) my head spun like crazy. It was disturbing. I can only imagine how a child feels seeing that happen.

No, and it's rated TV PG.Originally posted by Winston

Neither "stalking" nor "jihad" implies attempts to chop people's heads off.Originally posted by Winston

I would blame the beheaders, the parents of that child, and the History Channel, in that order.
That's not right, I have to agree.Originally posted by Space05us

No offense, but isn't it a part of history that people has been tortured and killed in very cruel ways through times ? It has often been the reason for unexpected shifts when cruel enough - an example : the stockholmian bloodbath wasn't sufficiently brutal.Originally posted by Space05us

I have no problem with life's harsh and brutal reality presented as such on TV, but a warning should be given.

History is brutal, yes. The world is brutal. The History Channel is tv, not a teacher. It is entertainment for people who get off on history.Originally posted by BlackCat

Also there is a large difference between seeing pictures and photographs of violence and seeing it take place in video.

Well, if you look at old paintings and drawings they are actually pretty accurate - modern videos just makes more pics. In fact, I think that showing what really happens is better than not showing - though, if it becomes entertainment as an execution was in the old days, I would think it's bad. Also there is a large difference between seeing pictures and photographs of violence and seeing it take place in video.

That's why God made the remote control and an assortment of channels.

The History Channel is tv
HBO is TV too. The only thing I think should have been done different is it should have been labeled TV14 or TVMA.

Maybe they should have a beheadings channel for this.

It's a good poitn though. Would they show a real rape? Say a true massacre? No they wouldn't. So they draw a line, and obviously a beheading attempt still was seen as an OK thing to show without much warning on a history show.
I'm definitely not saying it should be banned. No way. I'm saying some kind of a system should be there to protect viewers who don't like to watch beheadings. You can't undo those images.
This is nothing new though, you see JFK getting shot again and again, in slow motion and different angles and it is quite graphic, half of his face comes off. However, there must be some kind of a line anyway, otherwise you could show gang rapes if you really want to and say, hey, life is brutal.

Back when they had Movies in Time, I was watching it with a buddy, and they were showing a movie about the Dieppe raid. The rating came up "TV-PG" and a couple minutes later a whole ****-ton of dudes started getting wasted on the beaches.Originally posted by Space05us

Not like Saving Private Ryan of course, but still pretty gruesome for the sort of rating they give to Friends and the Simpsons.
I think they figure that it's educational and so they can get away with a lot more.

Along the lines of horrific viewings on television, a few days ago, I watched a documentary on Animal Planet that showed a group of chimpanzees hunting colobus monkeys.
When they caught one, the chimps basically tore the monkey apart while it was still alive.
