That's a great news!
and I think very much In Topic.
So far the research of extraterrestrial planets gave nothing for AC, but maybe in 5 years of the project they mention we will know there is or even are rocky planets.

I know this is Off Topic to the game, but...
Just bumped into an interesting article
Nearby star should harbor detectable, Earth-like planets
Reading it they are talking about Alpha Centauri B star.
So maybe we are gonna have some day AC IRL![]()

Totally on topic!
I've read speculation on AC, but this is the nearest I can remember that said detection rocky planets is do-able.

I hope that they will find something that is for sure!
What do I care about your suffering? Pain, even agony, is no more than information before the senses, data fed to the computer of the mind. The lesson is simple: you have received the information, now act on it. Take control of the input and you shall become master of the output.

This is good news for humanity. I think a planet with the appropriate gravity in AC (if it isn't like Venus) would increase the odds of humanity surving.
Since being a solar system away from the rest of humanity has a whole range of advantages.

Gawd, I hope it not. I'm not particularly fond of dying horribly and I even like to think that, maybe, mankind will perhaps find some way to not screw up the planet so bad we have no other option but to leave.Originally posted by Heraclitus

Also they aren't wiped out by their own actions or by the AI overlords. You see the glass half empty, I see it half full.

Abandoned the tribal mentality of nations? Hmmm. In SMAC we call them factions, and they have much the same function - ideology, self interest, territory. I'm not sure I see much difference.Originally posted by Heraclitus

In the SMAC history we most certainly came oh so close to wiping ourselves out on Earth through a combination of war and environmental degradation. For me the way SMAC plays out we took those same proclivities and applied them on to a new battleground - Chiron.
Eventually we'll have to leave Earth or be burned to a crisp as the sun's outer edges expand toward Earth in a billion or so years hence. That is a long time, and with the lifespan of an average species measured in millions of years (at best) we will have long since passed from the scene.
Cheers!

What a nice thing. We'll all be long gone before we have to worry about the sun.
Speak for yourself though, I intend on sticking around some time.

A billion years? Easy! Upload yourself into a conscious biosphere. Then you can play and think deep thoughts among the neural shunts until the last organic matter is crispy fried.

OK - who would like to book places on the shuttle already?

Running to Alpha Centauri will only buy us a reprieve of about 40 million years. There's a large gas cloud poised to collide with the Milky Way, which will likely create all sorts of problems, including new stars.
Read about it here. Join in the screaming too!![]()

I'm definitely getting off this doomed rock.
And who wants to be screaming about a gas cloud? I think it will be cool, and ultimately dangerous to be navigating around during that time period. All the species that start to emerge long after that rapture will hear legends or see the fireworks. Those of us who lived through it will be considered a special class of explorers or deities to less astrologically developed species.

Who said anything about a few billion years?
I just intend on living. Nothing more to it.
Theory is, if the theory that gods are created by belief, and that belief can override logic, since I'm an agnostic, I'm putting that belief to a better use - beliving I'm just going to go on living, no matter what.
Proves to be an interesting experiment.
With even the discover of gas giants orbiting stars in their habitable zones, it is almost assured that we should at least have some habitable moons in the interstellar neighborhood.

I never knew that MMI stood for "Monkey-Machine Interface"!
And I for one welcome our new Cybermonkey overlords!Monkeys with sensors implanted in their brains have learned to control a robot arm with their thoughts, using it to feed themselves with fruit and marshmallows.
A monkey feeds itself using a robotic arm.
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine scientists behind the experiment say it will lead to the creation of brain-controlled prosthetic limbs for amputees or patients with degenerative disorders.
"We are beginning to understand how the brain works using brain-machine interface technology," lead researcher Andrew Schwartz wrote in the Nature journal.
"The more we understand about the brain, the better we'll be able to treat a wide range of brain disorders, everything from Parkinson's disease and paralysis to, eventually Alzheimer's disease and perhaps mental illness." Watch monkeys feed themselves with robotic appendage. »
In the experiment, a pair of macaque monkeys were fitted with electrodes the width of a human hair that transmitted signals from areas of the brain linked to movements.
The signals directed the arms to grasp marshmallows and fruit and place it into their mouths in "one natural-looking motion," the Nature article said.
With their real arms restrained, the monkeys learned how to control the arms in a matter of days, negotiating obstacles and tilting their heads and moving their eyes without affecting the robotic limbs.
