Hmmm... at the beginning of the All Star broadcast, some interesting transfer news:
Jay Jay Okocha to Real Salt Lake is apparently almost done.
Denilson has been made an offer from FC Dallas.

@ Imran for handling this properly.

I couldn't think of anything off the top of my head... but I'm open to suggestions.
Mod powers give me the ability to change it up.
Wait... I have an idea

Re another competition nobody cares about: Club Brugge is making a splash in the domestic transfer market (after finishing a mere 6th last season). They've just purchased Sterchele, Belgian international and first division topscorer. Previously they had already signed Geraerts from Standard Liege (end contract), another Belgian international, and Mathijssen, coach and nicknamed the Mourinhu of the Low Countries. These 3 are the biggest transfer stories in Belgium so far, which indicates the ambition for the next season. All in all, the team has signed 6 first team players and 2 coaches. It's also racing towards season tickets record, with over 20,000 already sold and is in the process of building a new 40k stadium.![]()

At the half of the MLS All Star game, the MLS is up 2-0 on Celtic. Angel scored the first, collecting a nice through pass from (IIRC) De Rosario, on his way to scoring. The second was set up by a series of strange deflections on a free kick, but ended with a very nifty move and shot by Toja.
And at halftime Beckham confirmed what we (ie, US soccer fans) all feared, that he probably won't be 100% for the exhibition on Saturday vs. Chelsea, which was supposed to be his welcoming party. He'll probably be in for a few minutes at the end (20 mins at most, I'm predicting). The ankle is just still a problem.

Second half with no scoring. Finishes up 2-0 MLS.

Beckham playing it that friendly while injured really tells you why he's out there......merchandising. If a player isn't fit for a friendly then he just doesn't play.
Oh, and WTF is that supposed to mean?Originally posted by Colon™

Well, its a bit more than merchandising. This game has been hyped for weeks now by ESPN and US Soccer. If Becks doesn't play, it's the HUGE egg stain on both entities and gives the soccer bashers in this country another point in their favor.Originally posted by reds4ever

One of Becham's goals (and I'm quite certain he means it) is to help soccer in the US. Him at least showing up for a few minutes would be key to that. Or a lot of people who just tuned in to see Becks (since it's been hyped as his first game) will just turn off and not feel the need to come back.
Btw, got my Beckham jersey in the mail yesterday. Maybe I'll take a pictures of it

As a true friend of football, I'd say that the sport can live without the people that just want to see one player; The switching of shirt from Ajax to Juve to Inter [-->Zlatan Ibrahimovic] around here just seems pathetic.
That line of thinking destroyed great player like Garrincha... well the parts of him that he didn't destroy himself...

Not that Becks is on the same level, but maybe can bring in new fans who, well, didn't know they were a fan yet.

and, while were at it, 'friendly' not 'exhibition'...;O)
Garrincha - the brazilian right winger - had to play many games even after his legs had started to hurt. His club travelled the world, playing friendlies where the club got payed significantly less if Garrincha didn't play. Instead of allowing him to heal his legs and perhaps help him with his drinking problems, the club only cared about their profits.Originally posted by reds4ever

Thank you kind sir!
BTW I did know who Garincha was...![]()

Saw the Beckham debut. Thought it was well done. The stands at HDC were filled to capacity. Yeah, Becks got a hard tackle on him by Sidwell, but he got up, ran around on it afterwards, so I think its ok. Becks played like 15 minutes, IIRC. Definitely didn't look 100%, but he'll be alright.
Added some excitement though to an MLS exhibition (and no, I won't change vocabulary), and that's a great thing.

This is the first time I've heard a friendly called an exhibition. But suit yourself.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Beckham Makes MLS Debut as Galaxy Loses Exhibition to Chelsea
Not saying that you have heard it before, but exhibition is quite a common phrase in the US to describe games that don't count in the standings, and aren't part of a prescribed pre-season.

If it's "quite a common phrase," why hadn't I heard it before?
