    Doom 3

I bought it back in ,I guess, 2004 since that what the save games say, but I decided to fire it up because I recently upgraded my video card (still a blah card, but better than what I had) and I wanted to see if I could squeeze more juice out of it.

Sadly, I don't know because I can't remember what it looked like 3 years ago! ha.

I started a new game and the game still creeps me out as much as I remember. Damn zombies crawling out of the corners and the cutscenes of when you encounter a new type of demon give me the creeps. A bit dark, but the creepy aura is well done.

Am I just a p***y who is afraid of the dark?

No, the game can be creepy, especially as it's so dark and you have to switch to use the flashlight.

But it stops being creepy as soon as you realise it's just using exactly the same mechanic to scare you. Over. And. Over. Again.

For a really atmospheric game dig out the old classic System Shock 2 (I think it's free). Now there's a game that can set you on edge for hours after playing it.

DOOM 3 and HL2 are both pretty bad, one-trick-pony games.

There's nothing creepy in Doom 3, you can always guess when and where the enemies will attack, nothing surprising really

I never finished the game, got too linear too fast. It's always the same, no matter where you go you always end up thinking "didn't I see this room 5 minutes ago?"

    I guess that's one vote for p***y.

To be honest, I never finished it either, but it was more due to the fact that I got tired of the incredibly dark "flashlight crawls".

I'll see how far I get this go around before the flashlight turns me off again. The darkness is needed, but it's a bit too dark. Although that helps the creep factor too when you swing your light around and it beams a zombie right in his rotting melon.

I still think it's creepy and has good creepy atmosphere.

I will say that the sound is what makes it creepy more than anything else. With the surround sound going, the moans, whispers etc.. creep me out.

I prefer Doom original over Doom 3. I love open yet contained environments with unique characteristics. The first dozen or so levels of Doom are burned into my memory. Even now I remember desperate moments when I was low on health, nearly out of ammo, with a cacodemon or two bearing down upon me. At least Halo delivers in that respect.

Doom 3 is more of a rail shooter I think. Like one of those light-gun games at your local arcade.

There is something to be said for walking through a door into a large chamber covered in pentagrams and skulls full of a hundred odd deamons, pulling out your chain gun and going to town.

Doom 3 is all onsies and twosies. Just not the same game.

    Doom and Doom II

Also one of the first games to leave the corpses behind so you could admire your handywork after the fact. Anyone remember that awesome/gross sound when you blew up a barrel and splattered an enemy?

I still like Doom3, but I just had my memory refreshed from re playing it.

Although I don't think it's any more gimmicky than the previous Doom games, the one mechanic that I guess you guys are referring to is the following:

You're walking down the corridor half lit, all of a sudden the lights go out, you hear moans and when you turn around a demon is heading for you. Over and over.

That is very creepy at first, but I guess it becomes repetitive. Although even though I know that's the core gimmick in the game I still jump every time it happens.

And I still love the little cutscenes when a new demon shows himself.

It's better that way. Especially since no game company can possibly do anything perfectly.

You always need a bigger monitor. You could use the screen from an abandoned drive-in movie, and you'd still need a bigger monitor. Must have bigger monitor.

The funny part is that I just don't see much difference in terms of how the game is presented from original Doom to now.

The same "pop up demons from around the corner and blow them away" is how Doom always has been.

Yet, when the game receives a face lift and keeps the same core at heart and enhances it, all of a sudden it's not so good?

Been awhile since original Doom for me so maybe i'm missing something.
Oh well, it's good to hear different opinions.

FPS gameplay has evolved since the original Doom came out. Doom 3 was too old-school for my taste.

Now there's a good point. I actually agree. I just don't see how you could like old Doom and not like 3.

If your beef is that it is too linear/predictable etc.. then your beef is with Doom in general, not Doom3. All it did was give a damn good face lift to the spirit of the game.

Well, I couldn't play the original Doom anymore and enjoy it. Computer games are like any other technological products: they become obsolete with time. And its not just the graphics, the UI or the AI, but its the gameplay also.

Perhaps you don't remember the 1 on 100 killfests that doted the original Doom maps.

Sometimes I don't feel like tackling utility tunnel mazes and wondering down dark corridors for hours. I would rather just fire up the game, run around with a chainsaw for five minutes, and look back at a pile of 1000 festering corpses with pride. Awesome after a hard day at work.

Hmmm....I seem to vaguely remember that now. Of course that's why I loved serious sam, but that's another show..

Yeah, and there's a mod out there vastly improving the graphics so it looks smoother and more immersive (detailed and more varied textures etc). I never got very far though: got stuck rather early on, but I do remember it being quite spookeh
